Performs skilled protective service work overseeing the performance of the Animal Enforcement Officers. Responds to complaints concerning animals at large, cruelty to animals, injured animals, animals creating a nuisance and animal attacks on humans and other animals.
Supervises the work of Animal Enforcement Officers and support personnel by assigning, reviewing and evaluating the work.
Trains new employees in the methods and techniques of the collection and handling of animals.
Issues warnings and citations to owners of animals in violation of County ordinances and testifies to those citations in County Court. Additionally, may be required to testify in criminal proceedings. Investigates complaints of animal violations and issues written notices and citations.
Required to drive an animal rescue vehicle and collect stray or deceased animals.
Performs related work as required.

Ability to utilize Windows-based software.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and write clearly, accurately, concisely, legibly, and with correct English grammar, construction and spelling.
Knowledge of County geography and roadways.
Physical strength and stamina to lift and load heavy animals into animal control trucks.
Must have familiarity with multi-line telephone and 2-way radios.
Be available weekends, holidays, natural disasters, and after-hours, to assist and give direction on animal related issues; on rotational stand-by duty for emergency calls after regular hours.
- Must pass a psychological examination and pre-employment medical certification.
- Requires pre-employment medical certification, successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph. Requires drug test prior to assuming position and if employed, will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed.
- In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be expected to work.
- Work is performed outdoors where the incumbents are exposed to such conditions as inclement weather and dead, diseased or dangerous animals. Work requires such physical exertion as bending and lifting and pulling animals.
- Employees will have contact with inmates during the normal course of the workday.
- Must pass the State of Florida Animal Control Certification.
