GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
The Town of Warrenton Department of Public Works & Utilities is seeking a Maintenance Team Member to join our Facilities Management Division. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of general maintenance and repair, as well as experience working with a variety of equipment. Performs manual work in a variety of public works and utilities construction, maintenance, and repair projects; occasionally operates nonspecialized equipment in connection with manual tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Performing a variety of unskilled and semiskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of public facilities, buildings, grounds, utilities, and related facilities.
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, and other materials, tools and equipment. Spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces.
- Digs shallow trenches and ditches; cleans catch basins, manholes, and sewer lines. Assists with the construction of utility lines and facilities.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers complex defects or needed repairs to mechanics; cleans equipment including washing and waxing a variety of vehicles.
- Assists with the repair, maintenance, and installation of street signs and road markings.
- Performs custodial, building and grounds maintenance work.
- Picks up cans or containers for collection and dumps into truck and operates packer equipment. Sets forms; pours and levels cement.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste including dead animals and litter from buildings and grounds, parks, roads, roadsides and sidewalks.
- Acts as flagger.
- Assists with snow and ice removal and control.
- Operates light and medium sized construction equipment and vehicles, mowers, chain saws, pumps, mixers, trimmers, cement saw, air hammer, and similar equipment as qualified.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to use a variety of hand held tools such as rakes, shovels, and brooms to clean up areas inside and outside buildings, parking lots, construction sites, sidewalks, etc.; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience and minimal maintenance experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. May require possession of or ability to acquire VDOT flagger certification. Must be able to obtain and maintain VCIN contractor level clearance and will be subject to fingerprinting and additional background check.
