Job Purpose and Objectives:
The Auto Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work on a variety of vehicles and machinery. The main responsibility of this position is to repair and maintain, in good operating order, all city owned vehicles and heavy duty equipment owned by the City of Emporia.
Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.
- Performs general vehicle maintenance
- Performs minor engine repairs (alternators, brakes, water pumps, etc.)
- Performs gasoline engine tune-ups
- Inspects vehicle chassis for potential repairs, including shocks, springs, bearings, etc.
- Performs minor electrical repairs and replacements
- Performs minor truck body repairs (hydraulic hoses and cylinders, step replacements, etc.)
- Diagnoses HVAC problems and makes minor repairs
- Conducts minor diagnostics on gasoline vehicles
- Inspects small engines (mowers, blowers, trimmers, etc.) for issues and makes necessary repairs
- Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
- Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
- Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
- Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
- Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements:
- High school diploma or other equivalent
- One (1) to three (3) years of vehicle maintenance and repair experience in professional shop or equivalent in the forms of ASE automotive/light truck certifications required
Certifications / Licenses:
- Valid Kansas driver’s license required
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Ability to utilize a variety of hand tools, including wrenches, ratchets, hammers, etc.
- Ability to utilize a variety of power tools, including drills, impacts, grinders, etc.
- General vehicle mechanical repair knowledge
- General vehicle diagnostic knowledge and ability
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and service manuals
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
- Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently
- Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner
- Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
- Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
