School crossing guards are responsible for directing traffic at assigned crossing post to protect children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic. Their authority is limited to pedestrian, motor vehicle traffic direction and control at their assigned locations.(Any position may not include all duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties, which may be found in positions of this c1ass.)

- Reports directly to any assigned post on time and remains until the conclusion of the assignment.
- Insure children and pedestrians use the proper crossing locations and that children are not on the street while traffic is moving.
- Be alert for any potential traffic hazards in the area of the post. Report any such traffic hazards to the patrol duty supervisor immediately.
- To be responsible to the Patrol Captain and or the daily duty supervisor.
- Wear only the uniform and equipment issued or authorized by the Merrimack Police Department in a manner that promotes the Merrimack Police Department as a professional organization.
- Wear appropriate safety equipment at all times while performing the crossing guard function.
- Attend training sessions or meetings as required by the department.
- Perform such duties that may be requested by the Chief of Police or his designee.
- At all times while performing the crossing guard function act in a manner appropriate with the professional conduct expected of members of the Merrimack Police Department.
Have a general working knowledge of traffic and pedestrian control in order to safely allow for The movement of children. The ability to recognize hazardous situations and react to provide safe Movement of traffic and pedestrians. The ability to remain calm under stressful situations while reacting calmly and quickly to recognize when a hazardous situation needs to be reported to a duty supervisor.Must have a high school diploma, the equivalent or satisfactory work experience in providing public safety with public contact.
