Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for a
Tax Specialist to join our Tax Department. TheTax Specialist performs a variety of clerical and public contact work associated with the collection of County taxes. Work involves:
- Collecting taxes and fees over the counter (in person) and by mail.
- Responding to requests and answering questions from County taxpayers.
- Computing penalty charges and partial tax payments.
- Considerable data entry, including posting tax payments.
- Assisting with processing foreclosures, garnishments and attachments.
- Preparing collection letters.
- Utilizing a variety of investigative techniques to conduct database research (i.e., internet records, deeds records, previous tax records, etc.).
- Processing refunds and handling returned checks.
- Issuing mobile home moving permits.
Work will require the Tax Specialist to perform a variety of tax collection functions while utilizing independent judgement, strong decision-making, and knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act. If you are a customer focused individual with excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills who can show tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with taxpayers and the general public, we’d love to talk to you! The Tax Specialist reports directly to the Deputy Tax Collector.
High school diploma (or equivalent)
AND experience involving public contact and accounting (preferably in a collections/tax-related field);
OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Education can substitute for experience.
- Valid NC or SC driver license required.
- Notary Public Certification or the ability to obtain during the probationary period.
- Ability to complete special training, including NC School of Government "Fundamentals of Property Tax Collection" courses.
Physical RequirementsMust be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, facsimile machines, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
