Code Enforcement Officer

Position Overview
As a Code Enforcement Officer, you will support the Town's code enforcement program through fieldwork and office responsibilities. This position includes responding to citizen complaints, conducting investigations, issuing citations, and engaging with the community to resolve issues. You’ll also assist with special events, traffic control, animal control, and community outreach while representing the Town of Vail’s commitment to excellence and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce compliance with municipal codes and ordinances through field investigations and issuing citations or warnings.
- Respond to complaints, conduct interviews, gather evidence, and prepare detailed reports.
- Patrol the Town to identify code violations, educate residents, and facilitate resolutions.
- Provide support during events, traffic management, and I-70 closures in collaboration with CDOT.
- Assist with animal control, ensuring compliance with the Town’s animal ordinance.
- Serve as a community resource by answering questions and educating the public on municipal codes.
- Contribute to community engagement events such as Coffee with a Cop and school outreach programs.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of municipal code enforcement, investigation procedures, and recordkeeping.
- Ability to independently perform a variety of enforcement and compliance duties while maintaining professionalism and tact.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with community members, Town departments, and external agencies.
- Proficiency with computers, software applications, and report preparation.
- Adaptability to work in various conditions, including extreme weather and outdoor environments.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; specialized training in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: At least one year of experience involving public contact, ideally in an enforcement or investigative role. Experience enforcing municipal codes is highly desirable.
- Other Qualifications: Valid driver’s license and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed.
