- The City of Newberry is recruiting for the exciting opportunity as Building Inspector.This position works under the direction of the Building Official and is heavily customer service oriented and requires a passion for public service coupled with a high degree of enthusiasm, self-reliance, and job proficiency. Requires excellent customer service skills for both internal and external customers.
Nature of Work:
This position performs technical work in the enforcement of the Florida Building Codes. An employee in this class performs work that involves the inspection of all phases of building construction and alteration (structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical) including sites and structures to ensure compliance with codes.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Inspects sites and buildings (residential) to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Codes.
- Checks building plans and issues permits for new work and alterations.
- Processes applications and confers with the Chief Building official on questions and policies, other inspection issues, and code interpretations.
- Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding construction codes and building plans.
- Investigates inspections complaints.
- May review and pass upon plans for building construction and alterations.
- Coordinates activities with other City departments and public and private agencies.

Minimum Qualifications
- Five (5) years’ experience as a building inspector, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent, foreman or competent mechanic in charge of construction.
- Must be able to obtain a provisional certification for Residential Inspector.
The provisional building inspector must be able to obtain certification from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in the trade in which that inspector shall conduct inspections. It is the intent that building inspectors become cross trained and certified in each of the four major building construction trades. Provisional certificates acquired for any trade shall be converted to a standard certificate within two years, as prescribed by law, as a condition of continued employment.
Language Skills
The position involves public contact including in person, telephone, written correspondence, and coordination with other departments. The employee must be able to speak clearly and concisely and write detailed information and data in clear and proper English.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Good knowledge of principals and construction engineering practices as applied to the construction and inspection of houses, apartments, and commercial and industrial buildings.
- Ability to plan and supervise one’s own work and the work of others.
- Ability to drive a car.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the State of Florida.
Work Environment/Ada
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work on uneven or hard surfaces, in dusty conditions, in poor lighting, and noisy conditions. The position may require an
employee to bend, squat, reach, lift, turn or climb in either open or tight/confined spaces. The employee may work inside in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions and may be required to operate motor vehicles or other equipment/machinery.
