The purpose of the class is to serve in a trainee capacity to learn to perform a variety of technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the City’s inflow/infiltration program for the Department of Public Works Wastewater Division. The class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) months of full-time equivalent experience in maintenance and repair of a variety of mechanical equipment or a closely related experience.
- Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must possess and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with an N-endorsement (Tanker Vehicle) within 180 days of employment.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
Additional Requirements
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
- Requires shift work to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, night or day, including extreme heat or cold, and under work conditions that may be disagreeable and potentially dangerous.
- The incumbent will be placed in a Wastewater Technician, Pump Station Mechanic or Wastewater Equipment Operator position at the discretion of the Director of Public Works upon successful meeting minimum qualifications.
