High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required. Starting salary for 2024 is $22.42 per hour. Subsequent increases will be contained in a collective bargaining agreement. Extra credit may be obtained for residency, military, CDL and prior City of Barberton employment and will be added to a passing score of 70%. Proof must be submitted with application. Testing fee: $20.00 cash (non-refundable), to be paid with return of application.

JOB SUMMARY
An employee in this classification performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor; operates a variety of light and heavy motorized equipment in order to perform assigned tasks; performs routine inspection and maintenance work to ensure proper equipment operation and the efficient delivery of City services.
QUALIFICATIONS An example of acceptable qualifications:
Completion of secondary education (high school or GED), plus prior equipment operation experience or training, or equivalent.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Driver's License, plus must be able to qualify for and remain insurable under the City's vehicle insurance policy. All employees hired as an Equipment Operators shall be required to possess a CDL as related to the department.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS (*Indicates developed after employment):
Knowledge of: division policies and procedures; traffic laws governing motorized equipment operations; safety practices and procedures; mechanical maintenance and repair; public infrastructure maintenance and repair; geographical layout of the City; proper lifting techniques.
Skill in: use and operation of hand and power tools; use or operation of light to heavy motorized equipment.
Ability to: carry out instructions in written, oral, or picture form; deal with problems involving few variables within familiar context; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; complete routine forms; prepare accurate documentation; maintain records according to established procedures; develop and maintain effective working relationships; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in often adverse conditions; travel to and gain access to work site.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES (The duties listed below are intended to depict the types of tasks performed by this classification as related to the department):
1. Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled laborer tasks in order to assist with the efficient delivery of City services (e.g., cleans equipment, buildings, and grounds; prepares and paints surfaces; mows grass; plants flowers; trims hedges; rakes leaves; cuts trees and brush; places limbs in chipping machine; shovels snow and spreads salt; breaks up concrete and asphalt; shovels and rakes dirt, asphalt, and other materials; picks and digs ditches; cleans catch basins; assists with the landscaping and decorating of City property; lifts, stacks, loads, and unloads materials and supplies; performs litter collection, etc.).
2. Operates power tools; operates or assists with a variety of light (e.g., small trucks, nonCDL dump trucks, tractors, mowers, air hammer, chain saw, insecticide sprayer, etc.) and heavy motorized equipment (e.g., dump truck, trucks with snow plow attachment, grout equipment on the camera truck, pumps, etc.) in the performance of assigned duties (e.g. transports materials to and from project work sites, maintains and repairs distribution and collection systems, etc).
3. Performs a variety of manual maintenance and repair tasks at work or project sites (e.g., inspects and repairs water and sewage system equipment; assists in street repairs and resurfacing projects; removes debris from streets, etc).
4. Inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment operated (e.g., checks fluid levels, replaces bulbs, etc.).
5. Documents and maintains records pertaining to job performed (e.g., type of work, date/time/location of job, materials received and delivered; parts used in maintenance and repair, etc.); implements work orders as received from supervisory personnel.
6. Leads and directs other employees as needed; may instruct new or subordinate personnel on work procedures, equipment operation, etc.
7. Responds to emergency calls (e.g. snow and ice removal, water main breaks, and sewer emergencies).
8. Any other related duties as assigned.
9. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
