You will have the opportunity to work in a beautiful coastal NC town with close access to convenient locations throughout New Hanover County. We are looking for a full-time qualified Maintenance Technician.
General Statement of Duties
Performs duties including collecting litter in the town and on the beach strand. This position also keeps storm drains clear of debris as well as public accesses providing safe passage to the beach for the Environmental Services Division of the Public Works Department.
Positions at Wrightsville Beach Public Works requires all applicants to successfully complete pre-employment drug screening as well as a criminal background check.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class perform duties in accordance with established town rules and regulations, and the employee is held accountable for the successful completion of the assigned work orders. Employees are subject to hazards including working in an outside environment, exposed to extreme cold, heat, noise, and atmospheric conditions. Work is also subject to the final OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work performed is under general supervision and evaluated by observation for efficiency and effectiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Remove litter from public access areas, streets, beach accesses and beach strand according to the litter route provided by WBPW Environmental Services and Stormwater supervisor.
- Remove sand from public parking areas, and public access areas.
- Ensure all storm drains are clear of debris.
- Pickup town recycle receptacles.
- Serves as back up team leader when needed.
- Additional Job Duties
- Performs related duties as required. These duties can be within the Environmental Services area or could be helping another team within Public Works.
- This position may be required to work some weekends and summer holidays.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the hazards of the work and OSHA safety requirements.
- Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding the operation of town vehicles and equipment. This includes but is not limited to leaf blowers, lawn mowers, weed eaters and/or chain saws.
- Ability to prepare detailed electronic or written records.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to lead environmental services workers when needed.
- Ability to work in all types of weather.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform manual work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate a motorized equipment and distinguish traffic patterns to avoid injury to self and others.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and some experience in the operation of motorized vehicles; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
