POLICE OFFICER
SUMMARY OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, provides responsive and courteous police services, maintains order in the community, and protects lives and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances; duties generally consist of assistance, traffic control, investigations, interventions and patrol.

• Maintains order and protects the community through prevention, intervention education and enforcement; works to enhance the quality of life by implementing proactive measures to prevent crime, assist residents in addressing community issues, recognizing and resolving problems, and maintaining order in the City.
• Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; communicates with victims, witnesses and suspects in cases; secures accident and crime scenes; and provides assistance and protection for Fire and Medical personnel.
• Performs self-initiated activities, patrols the City, looking for suspicious activities and persons; identifies safety and traffic hazards, responds to citizens request for assistance, checks business locations and known problem areas, prevents and detects criminal activities, enforces traffic regulations, and maintains order and public safety in the community.
• Attends daily roll call briefings; reviews event logs, reports and statistical data; maintains awareness of shift goals and objectives. Crime trends and new and emerging crime patterns.
• Enforces local, state and Federal laws, and local regulations and ordinances, according to Department policies, procedures and regulations.
• Investigates crimes and accidents; secures and processes crime and accident scenes; identifies, collects and processes evidence within scope of authority and training.
• Completes detailed reports, specialized forms, affidavits, citations, and necessary paperwork.
• Inspects and maintains police vehicles, emergency response tools and equipment, and personal equipment according to Department standards.
• Arrests law violators; transport and processes suspects, victims, and prisoners; represents the City Police at court hearings; prepares reports and testifies in court cases.
• Assists and coordinates with other emergency services personnel, outside organizations and businesses, and Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
• Presents education and information programs for community and school awareness projects, counsels’ residents on law enforcement activities and referral resources.
• Performs additional assigned duties, including work with special enforcement teams.
• Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Department by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent; 21 years of age and have a clear criminal record. Must pass an entry level written examination, background investigation, physical and psychological examination.

POLICE OFFICER
Required Licenses or Certifications: Must be able to obtain a Peace Officers License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and a must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge of:
• City policies and procedures.
• Police Department General Orders, Code of Conduct, policies and procedures.
• City, county, state and Federal laws, regulations, codes and ordinances.
• Texas criminal justice and court procedures and records management methods.
• Modern law enforcement methods, practices and procedures.
• Basic criminal law on the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including preservation and presentation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases.
• Investigative procedures and protocols for observation of critical details.
• Local community issues and community resources available to citizens.
• Geography, roads, and landmarks of City and surrounding areas.
Required Skill in:
• Exercising controlled discretion in situations requiring diplomacy, fairness and sound judgement.
• Interpreting laws and regulations, making decisions, maintaining composure, and working effectively under stressful conditions and emergency situations.
• Recognizing suspicious behavior patterns, mediating difficult situations, questioning victims and witnesses, and using effective arrest & control techniques.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
• Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; required to physically restrain persons; subject to extended periods of intense concentration in review of crime scenes, special investigations and law enforcement report preparation. Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends and holidays on an assigned shift.
• Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.

Eligible full-time police officers possessing a TCLEOSE Intermediate Certificate receive an additional $75 per month above base pay. Officers with Advanced Certification receive an additional $150 per month. To be eligible for Certificate Pay, an officer must maintain current CPR and first aid certification and a satisfactory performance rating.
