SUMMARY
The Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.) is a seasonal/temporary position responsible for monitoring activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and aid swimmers. This position is vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of registered District patrons during the pool season.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Duties:
· Actively scan the pool area to identify potential hazards and prevent accidents.
· Monitor activities and enforce pool rules and regulations to ensure patron safety.
· Caution swimmers about unsafe areas or behaviors.
· Maintain a safe environment for participants and staff.
· Collaborate with other co-workers and supervisors to keep things running smoothly.
· Providing instructions to swimmers.
Emergency Response:
· Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administer first aid as needed.
· Respond effectively to emergencies following established protocols.
Facility Maintenance:
· Maintain order and cleanliness in the swimming area(s).
· Participating in keeping the area around the pool clean and free from hazards.
· Assist with basic maintenance tasks.
Water Quality:
· Report any water quality concerns to the Pool Manager.
Professional Development:
· Attending and completing applicable online/in-person training sessions and orientations.
· Demonstrate a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.
Additional Notes:
· Regular and timely attendance is mandatory.
· Scheduled work hours may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements:
· Must be 17 years of age at the time of application.
· Able to provide a valid work permit if under 18.
· Minimum of a 10th-grade education.
Desired Skills & Experience
· Minimum of three months of Lifeguard Teaching experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Strong Communication skills are essential for this role.
· Effectively interpret and apply information from various documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
· Ability to write clear and concise reports.
· Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions and directions to patrons.
· Bilingual is a plus.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
· Basic math skills: The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
REASONING ABILITY
· Ability to make quick decisions in emergencies.
· Can identify and solve problems with clear steps and predictable outcomes using commonsense.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Driver’s License & Insurance:
· A valid California Driver’s License or California Identification Card (or a School ID if applicable).
First Aide/CPR Certification
· Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Certification
· Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR certification for infants, Children, and Adults is required or equivalent.
· American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuer Certificate or equivalent.
· Completion of Title 22 training (required).
