This is a full-time position with a pay rate of $25.00 an hour. The city offers a comprehensive benefit package which includes 11 paid holidays.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Technical work investigating and enforcing City and State laws and ordinances including fire codes. Work is performed under the general direction of the Fire Marshal.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
Monitors the geographical boundaries of the City to ensure compliance with applicable state and local fire and building codes and identifies violations to the Code of Ordinances.
Work involves inspecting buildings for City and State fire prevention codes and laws: interpretation, application and enforcement of City and State fire prevention codes and laws pertaining to new and existing residential and commercial structures.
Conducts building, site and protective system plan reviews.
Resolves violations through voluntary compliance, or when not possible, sets in motion enforcement process by the issuance of citations or the initiation of a complaint to the Board of Adjustment and Appeals.
Conducts research to develop data and information, as required.
Disseminates information to the public by ways of communication devices (i.e. telephones, computers, etc).
Provides testimony in code violation matters, as necessary.
Keeps records, prepares documentation/reports of all activities and cases filed or forwarded for filing, to include investigative action for presentation to Fire Marshal and/or Deputy Fire Chief.
Conducts life safety inspections of existing commercial establishments and multi-family residences to determine the existence of fire hazards, the efficiency of fire protection equipment and general compliance with state and City fire codes and fire prevention standards.
Conducts life safety inspections for special events.
Conducts technical inspections of new building construction or building modification for conformance with applicable city and state building codes; inspects all work upon completion, giving final approval to work that meets applicable codes.
Advises owners, builders and contractors on fire safety, and reviews and processes plans and specifications submitted for building permits, checking for compliance with existing codes and standards.
Investigates complaints of fire safety hazards, compiling data and ordering actions to comply with codes and ordinances, as applicable.
May be required to be on call after hours, which includes some nights, weekends and holidays for investigations of fires of suspicious nature or involving injury or death to determine their cause; collects physical evidence, sketches fire scene, interviews witnesses or suspects, etc.
Additional Job Functions
Performs other related work as required.
May be requested to work during a declared emergency and may be requested to work during an undeclared emergency or in the aftermath of an event associated with a declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the employee's Department Head or designee will make the determination when the employee will be requested to work.

Minimum Training And Requirements
Graduation from high school or acceptable equivalency diploma with 3 years of experience as a Fire Inspector with residential / commercial code enforcement experience.
Special Requirements
- Certification as a Fire Inspector I by the State of Florida
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class "E" Florida driver's license
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, copiers, levels, measuring gauges, electrical diagnostic equipment, drafting tools, cameras, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs or other parts of body, and to physically maneuver over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces or physical structures. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
