Salary: $41.699 - $53.588/hour*
- Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.

Nature Of Work
This position inspects and oversees construction of buildings to ensure that procedures and materials comply with the approved plans, specifications, and codes. This is a customer service-oriented role, requiring the ability to gain compliance with City-adopted codes while maintaining good relationships with contractors, architects, and residents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
- Performs structural, electrical, and mechanical inspections on minor and major construction projects.
- Writes inspection reports and communicates inspection findings with contractors, residents, and architects.
- Assists with building plan reviews as needed and collaborates with staff plan reviewers to ensure compliance prior to permit issuance.
- Participates in meetings with contractors, developers, property owners and citizens.
- Assists with assessments and inspections for the Housing Rehabilitation Program.
- Observes work in progress to ensure that the procedures followed and the materials used conform to specifications, applicable codes, and approved plans.
- Examines workmanship of finished installations for conformity to established standards.
- Reviews applications for Temporary and Final Certificates of Occupancy (TCO/FCO).
- Reviews complaints concerning alleged violations of the City’s adopted building codes, gathers evidence, issues tickets, and appears in court as a witness if needed.
- Keeps records of inspections performed, and corrections recommended. Enters inspection results and complaints into the City’s permit tracking software.
- Rotates with other inspectors to care for on-call duties related to structural emergencies.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements Of Work
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in construction, architecture, building inspection, or related fields. The following ICC certifications will be required, and must be obtained within one (1) year of hire date:
- Residential Building Inspector
- Commercial Building Inspector
- Commercial Electrical Inspector
- Commercial Mechanical Inspector
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Advanced working knowledge of building codes, trade principles, and construction techniques.
- Possesses relevant experience in construction and/or performing municipal residential and commercial inspections.
- Able to coordinate information from a variety of sources, compile into appropriate formats, and interpret according to policies, practices, and procedures.
- Works effectively with employees of diverse backgrounds at all levels within the organization.
- Identifies problems and effectively troubleshoots to find resolutions.
- Applies rational thinking to solve practical problems and thinks creatively in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Performs calculations using algebra, geometry, and practical mathematics.
- Interprets construction documents, including architectural plans, technical journals, safety rules, procedural manuals, and legal documents.
- Able to effectively utilize computers, tablets, cell phones, and other necessary technology.
- Writes various reports, memoranda and other correspondence in the English language using proper formatting, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, utilizing all parts of speech in a manner understandable to the intended audience.
- Speaks in a poised and confident manner, with voice, diction, phonetics, and grammar that are understandable to the listener.
Physical Requirements Of Work
Ability to lift medium weight objects, open and close building windows and doors, apply pressure to building components, and perform other tasks requiring a moderate level of strength while performing inspections. Ability to work indoors with possible exposure to human, animal and rodent fecal matter; rodents and pests; inadequate ventilation, lack of light, filth and other unsanitary conditions. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to perform moderate manual work daily, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing stairs. Ability to smell and distinguish differences or similarities in intensity or quality of odors. Ability to focus on small and distant objects, recognize depth of objects, stand for long periods of time, work outdoors at night or in the early morning with reduced lighting, speak, and hear. Ability to use machines, tools, equipment, and work aids of those commonly associated with this type of work, including, but not limited to, automobiles, flashlights, room thermometers, cellular telephones, code books, tape recorders, personal computers, and tablets, measuring devices, hammers, screwdrivers, cameras, electrical devices, and protection devices.
Supervision
The employee is supervised by the Building Inspection Services Supervisor, under the general direction of the Building & Development Services Manager. The employee is responsible for completing work according to City work rules and safety regulations.
Public Contact
The employee has daily contact with other City employees, residents, property owners, agents, and contractors. The employee will work with other departments. Excellent customer service skills are paramount.
