Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Construction, Trades, and Special Projects provides the senior leadership and supervision of the University Housing Facilities’ construction trades (carpentry, locksmith, and painting). They are essential to the construction trade’s project management. They are the resident expert on small-scale construction projects. They are critical to the cohesive construction trades work in University Housing Residence Halls.
Primary Responsibilities -
- Supervisor Position
- Planning, Coordinating, Developing/Monitoring/Reporting Budgets
- Oversight of our Internal Construction Trades
- Assist with developing annual and multi-year special project schedules and budgets
- Ensure work compliance
- Develop specifications in accordance with Construction Specifications Institute (CSI)
Additional Responsibilities -
- Designated as essential personnel during inclement/hazardous weather and other emergencies
- Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 5 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

A bachelor’s degree in an engineering, architectural or construction management discipline with a minimum of four years experience demonstrating successful management of construction projects or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience through knowledge of applicable architectural/engineering/construction theory and practice. Knowledge of state procurement processes and policies. Valid driver’s license required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to write and interpret complex technical plans and reports. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications. Ability to use AutoCAD.

Job Duty
Works with Housing staff, construction services, campus partners, architects, engineers and contractors to develop projects, documents and departmental standards.
Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty
Provides day-to-day supervision for the Carpentry and Paint supervisors. Responsibilities: ensures shop workloads are being properly managed to guarantee customer satisfaction, budget compliance, work management compliances and all Human Resource responsibilities are being met.

Submits reports, meeting minutes, and correspondence pertaining to departmental projects. Maintains archived project files.

Responds to emergency, weekend and/or hazardous weather plan call backs including being part of an on-call rotation. Other duties as assigned.

Reviews, plans, schedules, specifications and product selections to assure compliance with codes, regulations and departmental need. Monitors and controls project budgets. Ensures all state and university hazardous materials policies and procedures are followed. Inspects work and products to ensure conformance with departmental standards. Works in the best interest of the department and the University to resolve disputes pertaining to construction and renovation. Provides overall supervision for our Construction trades (carpentry & painting).

Makes recommendations for purchase of materials and equipment used in projects. Working with various stakeholders develops critical path schedules for projects and estimated costs for project. Working with maintenance staff and other key players performs value analysis of products and services. Participates in value engineering exercises. Coordinates outages, restriction of building usage and escorts. Supervises on-site work crews.
