The Longview Fire Department provides an array of services to the citizens of Longview from eight fire stations strategically located throughout Longview, as well as a designated Fire Training Center. The Longview Fire Department has 186 employees - including 178 uniformed personnel - and an annual Department budget of nearly $30 million. Reporting to the City Manager, the Fire Chief directs and leads Longview Fire Department (LFD) activities and employees, ensuring the Department’s compliance with state and federal laws and the public safety goals of the City. This position directs coordinated responses to stabilize and control emergency incidents and provides leadership, direction, and guidance in LFD strategies and priorities. The Fire Chief directs LFD operations, including Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, EMS, and Emergency Operations Center.
The City of Longview seeks an experienced leader with a proven record of success in managing complex fire departments to serve as its next Fire Chief. The ideal candidate is an expert in emergency medical services, fire suppression, and mutual aid coordination, who can confidently and effectively navigate the challenges of a growing City. They will have knowledge of City and Fire Department policies and procedures; modern emergency services management principles and techniques and practices for effective, efficient, and cost-effective management of allocated resources. The Fire Department is not collective bargaining, civil service, or meet and confer, so the next Fire Chief must be adept at managing personnel and resources in a non-unionized environment. Additionally, the candidate will be well-versed in current trends and strategies for the deployment of personnel and equipment in emergency situations and for general community protection.
A bachelor’s degree in fire science, criminal justice, or a related field, plus a minimum of seven (7) years of fire service experience – including at least five (5) years of supervisory experience – is required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Candidates must possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License and a Certification for Master Firefighter from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP). A Certification for Paramedic from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is preferred.
Longview is offering a salary range of $139,446-$188,663 for this position, depending on experience and qualifications.
