The City of Battle Creek is looking for an individual to perform support work handling clerical and bookkeeping related utility billing, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the general direction of the City Treasurer.
Individuals selected to move forward in the hiring process will be required to complete testing in Excel, Word, Office Spelling /Grammar, and Utility Billing Test.
- Prepares billing for industrial/commercial account cycle and/or reviews same as prepared by Utility Billing Clerk. Checks utility meter reads, bills, and usages and makes appropriate corrections, and estimates.
- Maintains subsidiary ledgers and accounts, included but not limited meter and rate set up. Sets up, merges, and initiates terminations and transfers of utility service as necessary. Records and maintains utility tenant deposit accounts.
- Receives and responds to billing complaints and provides information regarding Departmental policies, rules, and regulations. Responsible for bad debt collections and processes with assistance from support staff.
- Assists supervisor by gathering, recording and summarizing data, and calling attention to any unusual findings. Prepares correspondence, records, and reports. Recommends and assists in changes, additions, and deletions to automated billing and other computerized reports/summaries.
- Efficient use of various office equipment and computer software, such as Microsoft suite.
- Associates/Technical degree with coursework in business, accounting, or related field.
- 1-3 years experience in bookkeeping and related clerical work.
Special Requirements:
- Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
This work is sedentary and requires little to no exertion of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office).
