THE POSITION
The position of Animal Services Assistant is crucial for providing first-line animal services contact with the public, both in person and by telephone. This role involves offering general information and assistance, performing a broad spectrum of clerical and office support functions, handling fee payments, and managing a variety of animals when needed. The Animal Services Assistant will play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations within the department by managing databases, compiling reports, maintaining records, and providing excellent customer service. This entry-level position demands a basic knowledge of animal services functions and operations, as well as a commitment to the Community Development Department’s mission of enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Moreno Valley.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Animal Services Assistant position is a compassionate, detail-oriented individual who excels in customer service and office support duties. This person should be adept at handling a variety of animals with care and empathy and possess a solid understanding of the laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to animal control and services. The ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in office management practices, correct English usage, and basic data gathering techniques. They must have the ability to type accurately, manage multiple tasks, and maintain organized records. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with the ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with sensitive situations. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to supporting the department’s goals of providing rabies control, public veterinary services, pet adoptions, and humane education to the community.
Minimum Qualifications
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and of one year of office administrative or clerical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. An incumbent must be willing to handle animals in the course of employment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Animal Services Assistant is an entry-level, clerical and office support class in Animal Services. Incumbents are responsible for providing front-line customer-service and information to the public on animal services policies and procedures, as well as performing clerical and office support duties in support of department operations.
Animal Services Assistant is distinguished from other clerical and administrative support functions in that the former class requires basic knowledge of animal services functions and operations.
