Sports Recreation Coordinator.
While the position is primarily for a Sports Coordinator, the responsibilities outlined below can also be expected.
The City
The City of Atascadero is a small, beautiful California central coast community located in San Luis Obispo County. We have a population of 30,000 residing in an area just under 27 square miles. Our community is a great place to live, work and raise a family! We are situated along Highway 101, halfway between the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The community is located in the Paso Robles wine region and is a short 20-minute drive to the beach and Highway 1. We are within a three-hour drive to Yosemite National Park and two hours to Monterey or Carmel. About The Department
The
Recreation Division is part of the Community Services Department and includes the Colony Park Community Center, Recreation Programs (Classes, Sports Leagues, Special Events, etc.), and parks, fields, and BBQ area rentals. As part of Recreation Services, the City of Atascadero offers A-Town Park for scootering and skateboarding activities, Pickleball Courts, Joy Playground, and outdoor basketball courts as well as other outdoor spaces. In addition, the City also offers a variety of camps and programs at the Charles Paddock Zoo.
Recreation offers an extensive range of classes and programs designed to cater to the diverse interests and age groups within the community. From children to adults, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The classes span various categories, including fitness and wellness, arts and crafts, sports and recreation, dance and music, and educational workshops. Participants can engage in activities such as yoga, pottery, painting, soccer, basketball, and much more. The recreation programs also include exciting events, community celebrations, and seasonal activities throughout the year. By offering these classes and recreational programs, the City is able to foster an active and vibrant community, enhance personal well-being, and provide opportunities for residents to connect, learn, and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment.
General Purpose
Performs responsible, professional work in the development, administration and evaluation of a wide range of community recreation programs, classes and activities for seniors, adults and youth; organizes and conducts special events, including community organized events, meetings, weddings and recreational year-round programs; schedules and operates recreational and rental facilities.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Community Services & Promotions Director.
Supervision Exercised
Supervises part-time staff, special interest instructors, seasonal employees, and volunteers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Coordinates staff in the development, organization and implementation of community recreation programs for participants from preschool to advanced age groups, and maintain annual calendar of community programs and special events.
- Supervises classes, workshops and activities for persons engaged in recreation programs and co-sponsored programs; determines personnel, equipment and materials needed for assigned program activities.
- Selects, plans and implements cultural arts, physical activities and special interest activities; coordinates programs and facility use with individuals from other agencies and organizations.
- Participates in interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating personnel, including part-time staff, contract employees, and volunteers.
- Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, email correspondence, social media or during public meetings.
- Prepares a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, Atascadero Recreation Guide, and related communications regarding recreation programs for publication; promotes and advertises programs and facilities through a variety of school, team and social media sources; maintains inventory of program supplies and equipment, monitoring and ordering as needed.
- Coordinates sports programs (i.e., basketball, kickball, T-ball, volleyball, for both youth and adults, as well as youth sports clinics), registers team members, collects fees, acquires coaches, coordinates scheduling of coaches and playing sites, assigns officials and scorekeepers distributes uniforms and supplies. Schedules and runs various tournaments throughout the year.
- Supports City special events (i.e., signature events like Tamale Festival, Cruisin’ Weekend, Concert Series, Movies, Winter Wonderland, etc.), assists with staffing, working with and coordinating registration of vendors, assist with flyer distribution to promote events, along with set-up and clean-up. Assists with coordination and scheduling of BBQ Rentals, field use and banner calendars, facility rentals, etc.
- Plans arts and crafts and cultural activities, special events, trips, contract classes, Teen Center activities, fundraising events and sports activities for year-round and seasonal programs; supervises the collection and accounting of money for class registrations; submits purchase requisitions; prepares budget recommendations for the allocation of personnel, equipment, and supplies in the area of program activities; monitors program budgets.
- Assists in the planning and management of any concession related activities for sports organizations, including design, layout, operation, inventory, contracting and staffing.
- Promotes interest and provides information regarding programs to school officials, other officials, community service groups, other departments and the general public.
- Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel. Evaluates program attendance, participant responses and costs, prepares and monitors program budgets, and makes recommendations regarding the continuance or cancellation of programs.
- Analyzes trends in recreation programming, community desires, programs being offered, program requests, socioeconomic needs, demographics, and other factors in program planning to best serve their community.
- Assists in the scheduling of activities, weddings, meetings and functions at the Pavilion on the Lake. Coordinates reservations, preparation, setups, takedowns and cleaning; assists in facility management as assigned. Assists with the promotion of meetings, special events and functions at the Pavilion on the Lake.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, email correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies necessary for activities, conducting arts and crafts activities, making arrangements for rental and use of recreation and rental facilities, helping with setup for classes, events, league games, etc.
Peripheral Duties
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of part-time and seasonal staff. Manages safety training and monitors safety procedures for compliance with State and local regulations.
- Serves as a member of various committees, attending meetings and assisting in providing staff support, including the preparation and presentation of staff reports. Meet with various professional and community groups to promote recreational activities and special events.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and programs common to the field of recreation and community service operations and management; attention to detail in the planning, administration, equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program; significant familiarity with methods for identifying community recreation needs.
- Knowledge in the area of Facility Management and Special Event Coordination, or solid experience in the area of Youth and Adult Sports programming, as applicable to the Classification.
- Experience in planning, promotion and implementation of recreation and community service programs. Marketing skills are desirable.
- Understanding of budgeting and personnel management as practiced in public agencies.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of people; ability to analyze unusual situations and resolve through application of City/Departmental policy; ability to work constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
- Expertise in principles of supervision, training, and evaluation of staff.
- Possess excellent customer service skills using tact, judgement and discretion and have a flexible, approachable, friendly demeanor. Willingness to participate in a fast-paced team environment; be self-motivated, highly energetic and creative.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Skill in First Aid methods and safety practices related to recreational program planning and evaluation.
- Skill in the operation of the listed equipment.
Special Requirements
- Possession of valid California driver license and a satisfactory driving record.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Pursuant to California Labor Code Section 3211.9, service is essential in times of extreme emergency or disaster. For this reason, State law designates public employees as “Disaster Service Workers” Even when off-duty, this position may be required to return to duty in case of emergency or disaster.
VACATION: 10 days per year, gradually increasing to 24 after 20 years completed.
HOLIDAYS: 11 days per year, plus one floating holiday.
SICK LEAVE: 12 days per year.
HEALTH & LIFE: Employee is covered for medical, dental, vision and life. The City contributes a portion of the cost of dependent coverage for medical, dental vision and life insurance.
RETIREMENT: California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). No FICA deductions.
