Hiring range for this position is $38,604.80 - $46,176.00. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 13.
General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate professional and administrative work for the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter to find appropriate placement for shelter animals through adoption, rescue transfer, and foster placement while maintaining relationships with rescue partner groups and foster families. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Shelter Care Supervisor.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Responsible for overseeing adoption services, and developing, implementing and coordinating animal transfer and foster activities within the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter.

- Assists in evaluation of animals and collaborates with other staff in selection process for adoption, transfer, and euthanasia.
- Responsible for knowing which animals are available for placement and the temperaments and personalities of these pets.
- Establishes and fosters partnerships with other animal shelters and rescue groups to transfer animals to other facilities to improve adoption opportunities.
- Coordinates recruitment of active and qualified rescue groups, including verifying rescue group references and maintaining a list of these groups.
- Works with rescue groups to coordinate transport when needed.
- Drives department vehicle to transport animals on as needed basis.
- Prepares and maintains required paperwork (eg. Contracts, applications, transfer agreements, etc.) for the transfer of animals to other agencies and/or foster homes.
- Maintains and updates animal inventory records to record and track the transfer and placement of animals to other agencies and/or foster homes.
- Communicates information and transfer requests to groups via social media, phone, or email.
- Manages foster program efforts and operations including the recruiting, screening, and training of foster homes.
- Maintains list of active foster homes and coordinates animals with these homes.
- Oversees adoptions at the shelter, including working with the adoption counselor to discuss specific animal needs to ensure proper matches are being made.
- Listen to customers and provide effective responses and remedies to their questions and needs.
- Treats all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, transmits these values to others.
- Assists with tours, lectures, public education programs, fundraising activities and special events as needed.
- Answers all phone and in-person inquiries in a professional manner, routes inquiries as appropriate.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of modern and complex principles and practices of animal care. Advanced knowledge of animal handling and behavior utilizing fear free methods. Working knowledge of common health problems, medical care and treatment. Working knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations. General knowledge of local community resources regarding animal rescue efforts. Possess strong networking skills in order to recruit and maintain strong network of transfer partners and foster homes. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, communities, rescue groups, and members of the public. Ability to exercise good judgement when dealing with the public, volunteers, other employees, animal-related concerns, and confidential information. Ability to coordinate projects, set priorities, and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to maintain detailed records, and effectively communicate animal needs in effort to secure appropriate placement.
Education and Experience:
Requires graduation from high school or GED equivalent with at least 1 year animal care and behavior experience in an animal shelter setting.
Prefer dog training certification from nationally recognized certifying body that endorses science based training methods as recommended by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), ie: KPA, CPDT, IAABC, VSPDT, etc., As well as Fear Free certification.
Requires Microsoft Office proficiency including Outlook, Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements:
This work is performed in an office and shelter setting. Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and the lifting, carrying pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds with assistance). Requires the ability to perform coordinated movements. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate color, sound, odor, visual perception and oral communication. Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as disease, noise, odors, wetness and toxic chemicals.
Special Requirements:
Must have or obtain NC Drivers' License with acceptable driving record.
