YOUR POSITION
The Accountant II in the Financial & Management Services Department performs professional accounting duties, including the analysis, preparation, and maintenance of financial records and reports for various City accounts and funds. This journey-level position requires knowledge of governmental accounting systems and procedures and the ability to exercise independent judgment within established systems. Responsibilities include analyzing and maintaining accounting records and systems, performing reconciliations, preparing budget schedules, participating in month-end and year-end closing processes, and administering special fund accounts. The Accountant II ensures the accuracy and legality of financial transactions and provides timely information and assistance to customers, all while maintaining confidentiality and effective working relationships with stakeholders.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Accountant II position is a detail-oriented professional with a thorough understanding of general and governmental accounting principles, practices, and terminology. They have experience in financial statement preparation, cost and project accounting, and financial control and reporting. The candidate is proficient in operating computers and spreadsheet software, verifying the accuracy of financial data, and analyzing and reconciling complex financial transactions. They are capable of organizing tasks, setting priorities, and exercising sound independent judgment. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, along with the ability to maintain confidentiality and establish effective working relationships, are essential. The ideal candidate is also adept at identifying and resolving issues, ensuring proper authorization and documentation for disbursements, and developing accounting procedures and forms independently.
Minimum Qualifications
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in accounting or a closely related field.
In addition to the required education, a minimum of two years of professional accounting experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience is strongly preferred.
About The Financial Operations Division
The Financial Operations division provides accounting services for the City including internal and external reporting, and accounts payable. This division also administers the annual audit process, produces the annual Annual Comprehensive Financial Report and is responsible for determining the propriety and legality of all financial transactions.
