Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an
Administrative Assistant (Administrative Assistant 4G), grade
G27, in the
Climate and Energy Division.
About The Position
This is responsible professional principal work in the Department’s Climate and Energy Section, whereby incumbents perform a variety of assignments in the areas of public information management, community engagement, data management and reporting, communication/marketing, etc. Work assignments are performed with independent judgment, action and initiative within the scope set by the Division’s Associate Director and under the leadership and direction of the Department’s Director. May require direct and independent contact with all levels of management throughout the County and the public. This incumbent must be willing to work evenings, weekends and special activities, as assigned.
About The Agency
The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).
Examples of Work
- Serves as lead in the County’s Climate Action Implementation Plan’s Public Community Outreach to improve internal and external communications, resolve any policy/procedures relating to public outreach and to ensure a coordinated approach to promoting the County’s Climate goals.
- Assists with the design and concept for departmental/County’s Climate Action Implementation Plan publications to ensure that the information is accurate, updated, and consistent and effectively promotes the services and programs of the department/procedures relating to public outreach and to ensure a coordinated approach to promoting the County’s Climate goals.
- Works cooperatively with the County Agencies’ Public Information Officers, to conceptualize and develop themes for projects, presentations, and exhibits based on the Climate Action Implementation’s goals.
- Develop, submit, and implement plans to create new communication strategies that provide information on climate and environmental programs to the community.
- Identifies methods of publicizing, internally and externally, the progress of the Climate and Energy Section through the data collection efforts (i.e. dashboards).
- Gather and analyze feedback from the public to inform program improvements and policy decisions.
- Reviews, edits, and updates all branding correspondence, memos, website content, social media posts, media releases, and publications for the Department.
- Serve as lead on County website migration working with the Office of Information Technology, Web support Team and DoE website coordinators.
- Promotes the County’s Climate goals by interacting with community members by participating in local events, community activities, schools, civic and HOA associations, etc.
Qualifications
- Graduation from college with major course work in liberal arts, one of the social sciences, or public or business administration.
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in government or business. At least one (1) year of this experience should have involved supervision of a high-level administrative staff.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience specifically in public information or communications within the environmental or energy sectors.
- Comprehensive understanding of climate science, renewable energy technologies, and current environmental policies and regulations.
- Proven experience in managing media relations, including working with journalists and crafting compelling press materials.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing community outreach programs that foster public participation and awareness.
- Experience in crisis communication, particularly in responding to environmental emergencies or public health issues related to climate change.
- Strong skills in using digital communication tools, including social media analytics, website management, and graphic design software.
- Ability to conduct research and analyze data related to public sentiment and engagement, informing communication strategies.
- Strong creative thinking and problem-solving abilities to develop innovative outreach strategies and address communication challenges.
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profits, and community organizations.

General Plan Information
The Prince George’s County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.
Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.
The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).
New employees must enroll in the County’s health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.
The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the
beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
After enrolling in the County’s benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
