Summary of Job
The Building Inspection Division is dedicated to the public safety in the construction environment throughout the City through area development, promotion of uniform codes/standards, administration, and in education/instruction for the facilitation of safe and secure home and businesses. The Building Inspection Division, under the City Municipal Code, adopts all of the Department of Professional Services, State of Wisconsin, Building, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Codes. Through the adoption of these codes, the city ensures that all construction in the city is complaint with all codes and requirements of the State.
Under direction of the Director of Planning & Development, the Code Enforcement Officer assists in the enforcement of environmental health and housing codes by getting out in the field and evaluating and documenting properties for compliance. It is imperative job duties are performed with respect, integrity, objectivity, and in the best interest of the City. All City employees are expected to be hones and truthful at all times.
Responsibilities
- Performs housing inspections and surveys as they pertain to the minimum housing code.
- Investigates citizens’ complaints of code violations.
- Initiates appropriate legal action through the City Attorney on the basis of findings, assists the City Attorney in prosecution, and acts as an expert witness.
- Performs nuisance control duties.
- Explains and enforces applicable laws and regulations.
- Keeps accurate records and completes the necessary reports, forms, and summaries.

Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in the building trade and/or building inspection field preferred.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license and auto insurance in accordance with state of Wisconsin law required. May require use of personal vehicle while on the job.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Public contact experience and demonstrated ability to maintain effective public relationships.
- Working knowledge of the basic principles and practices of environmental health and construction.
- Ability to apply departmental laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to secure facts through investigations and inspections.
- Ability to plan and show independent judgment and discretion.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working and public relationships and enforce regulations with tact and impartiality.
- Ability to prepare and keep accurate records and present effective oral and written reports.
- Ability to lift and carry weight in excess of 35 pounds safely.
- Ability to work a varied schedule, if necessary.
