The City of Wilmington is looking for a Recreation Coordinator who will coordinate the Environmental Education and Interpretive program and assist with the curation of animal ambassadors at the Nature Center at Halyburton Park.
- Coordinating facility operations by opening and closing facilities, managing facility operations on weekends, assisting with maintenance of grounds and facility, monitoring for security issues, reporting necessary repairs, coordinating facility use, and operating city vehicles
- Coordinating, developing, and instructing environmental education programs, curriculum and materials for visitors of all ages, including camps and outreach programs
- Developing educational exhibits and activities with seasonally and geographically relevant themes. Collecting and processing new biological artifacts (pressing leaves, preserving mushrooms, etc.), writing exhibit copy, layout and formatting exhibit copy, and designing graphics for the exhibit
- Providing animal husbandry for a variety of native animals including fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, establish feeding and maintenance schedules, and ensure adequate supplies are maintained.
- Maintaining program props, interpretive displays, native plant gardens, and demonstration bird feeder areas
- Assisting with maintenance of trails
- Assisting with natural resource management projects
- Performs administrative duties by creating documents and flyers, recommending rules and regulations, scheduling activities, answering phones, greeting patrons, running cash register, preparing and delivering bank deposits, maintaining attendance log, updating member files, making copies, distributing marketing materials, assisting with programs and special events, assisting with budget maintenance, ordering supplies, and maintaining communication with other agencies.
Education
Associate's degree or higher in Parks and Recreation, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Biology, Education or other closely related field of study OR equivalent combination of education and the experience required below.
Experience
Minimum one (1) year of experience in Parks and Recreation, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Biology, or Education
Requirements
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid and AED certification upon hire

This position has been identified to interact with children and must comply with NC G.S. 153A-94.2(b) “requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI.” These checks must be conducted in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26 (Download PDF reader), the statute which authorizes the SBI to provide a fingerprint-based state and national criminal record check to cities and counties.
