The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervisory social work leading a staff of Social Workers that provide direct and/or indirect services to clients in the Adult Services Unit. Work supervised is predominantly at the level of Social Worker III. Employees assign cases to subordinates, coordinate the operations of the unit, and supervise staff through case review and consultation which requires the provision of substantial and recurring technical direction. Employees are responsible for staff training, personnel issues and ensuring that quality services are provided. Employees may provide input to higher level management on administrative, personnel, and budget issues.
Personnel Supervision
- Directly monitor work of Adult Services Social Work staff; reviews cases to ensure timeliness, accuracy, thoroughness, compliance with regulations and policies, and confers with staff regarding issues or problems.
- Provide ongoing performance feedback through regular meetings and an annual performance review on each employee. Discuss problems, areas of growth and strengths with staff and provide coaching feedback, or disciplinary actions as appropriate.
- Provides on-the-job training for staff and makes arrangements for staff to receive formal training when offered.
- Manage/monitor leave requests and review of day sheets and timesheets.
- Assigns cases to staff and maintains workload balance.
- Sets work standards; ensures that policies, rules and regulations are followed; and explains and implements changes when necessary.
- Provides counseling and discipline, which includes discussing problems with staff and issuing initial oral warnings for disciplinary action.
Supervision of Adult Services Program
- Ensure programs policies, rules, and regulations are met.
- Follow all policies, and procedures; interprets new legislation to determine impact on operations; and prepares narrative and statistical reports to communicate information such as service trends.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining department community resources network; represents the department in the community; and speaks before groups on matters related to assignment.
- Reviews program objectives and service delivery needs with staff and formulates specific goals and objectives for the assigned program area.
- Makes changes in work procedures to meet program demands and presents recommendations to management on issues which impact on programmatic goals, objectives and policies.
- Supervisor is expected to process client specific issues, answer questions, and request outside consultation support as needed.
- Assists in the development, justification, or allocation of funds, and manages a small unit budget necessary for staff administrative expenditures.
- Develops special reference and training materials in order to meet staff training needs; trains staff in areas such as human behavior, group dynamics, crisis intervention, family dynamics, problems of aging, and alcohol and drug abuse.
- Interviews applicants for positions and makes recommendations to higher level management on hiring decisions.
- Provides input on discussions concerning promotions and salary adjustments for individuals supervised.
Knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training. Considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems. Considerable knowledge of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources. Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies which govern social work programs. Ability to supervise, train, or orient lower-level social workers, students, interns, or other staff. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
Master’s degree in social work from an accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a master’s degree in a human services field from an accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an accredited institution and four years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree from and accredited institution and five years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
