Ready to keep outdoor spaces looking their best through expert mowing and grounds care? The Department of Enterprise Services, Honolulu Zoo is looking for a Power Mower Operator-Grounds Keeper! This position, located in Honolulu, is responsible for operating passenger-type power mowers as a primary duty while caring for, maintaining, and beautifying landscaped areas.
What You'll Do
- Operate mowers, edgers, loaders, and other equipment to maintain lawns and paved areas, and clean up leaves, branches, stones, and trash.
- Clean zoo restrooms, entrances, and buildings by scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing, filling paper dispensers, and emptying trash while checking daily for cleanliness.
- Trim and care for plants, using herbicides or insecticides safely, and make sure visitors follow safety and animal-protection rules and signs.
- Weed and water lawns and planted areas, and help control rodents, cats, mongooses, and pigeons by trapping or preventing nesting and breeding.
- Plant grass, flowers, shrubs, or trees as directed, assist in emergencies like fires or storms, and secure gates and buildings as needed.
- Help with minor building repairs like painting, changing light bulbs, and fixing fixtures, and assist with setting up special zoo events.
- Performing other related duties as required.
Special Work Requirements- The Honolulu Zoo is open seven days a week. Therefore, while this position regularly works 5 days a week, your work schedule may include weekends and holidays depending on operational needs.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Some experience and/or training in the repair or operation of passenger-type power mowers or similar motorized equipment.
Must be able to:- Safely operate and maintain a passenger-type (riding) power mower.
- Understand work hazards and follow safety precautions.
- Care for lawns and landscaped areas.
- Fix minor equipment issues.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn and enforce rules to protect public property and safety.
- Follow safety rules and handle heavy loads properly.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
- Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3/automobile), as required.
- Obtain and maintain from the City’s Health Services Branch, a Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test, prior to appointment.
