An employee in this class is responsible for managing and supervising the operations of the Solid Waste Division in the Public Works Department. The employee plans and administers the collection and disposal of solid wastes, hires, trains and conducts performance evaluations, handles field complaints, and provides solutions. Emphasis of the work is on developing operational plans and programs for the collection and disposal of residential and commercial refuse and garbage, loose trash in neighborhoods, and recycling. Work includes supervising Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and two supervisors as well as divisional staff, reporting tonnage collected, resolving operational issues with routes, and establishing goals and objectives. Work also includes initial review of fleet maintenance orders, hiring and training staff, oversight of special projects, and budget preparation. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Director and is evaluated by visual inspection and periodic conferences. This classification is considered exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
