Assists a skilled electrician in the performance of work connected with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Electrician in that the Electrician Helper works with and assists a skilled electrician in performing tasks which are incidental to skilled electrical work; whereas the Electrician independently performs skilled work in connection with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and appurtenant fixtures.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
- Replaces light fixtures, street lights, outlets, switches, breakers, and relay controls;
- Checks traffic lights to see that they are operating properly and makes minor replacements, if necessary;
- Digs pole holes, assists in setting poles, and sends up equipment and tools with a hand line;
- Occasionally works on poles;
- Assists in installing cable by preparing, tinning and wiping metals, preparing lugs, nipples, and taps, and in installing rack and racking cable;
- Assists in the repairing and rewiring of electrical equipment;
- Assists in the installation of circuit breaker, dry transformers, and similar equipment in electrical distributing stations;
- Performs simple trouble shooting on house lines;
- Operates a truck in hauling men and materials.
Training and Experience: (1) Graduation from high school and one year of experience assisting a skilled electrician or equivalent; or (2) any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge of: elementary principles of electricity; common practices, hand tools, material s and equipment used in the electrical trade; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to: use common electrical tools; do mechanical work connected with the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems, and perform manual labor; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
