Job Summary

The Office is currently seeking an Assistant Attorney General in the Human Services Division of the Office.
The Human Services Division provides litigation services and legal counsel to the Department of Human Services, the Department of Direct Care and Treatment, and the Department of Children, Youth, and Families. AAGs in the division represent these agencies in a broad range of cases involving health care, licensing, children and family services, and civil commitment. AAGs regularly handle cases in state and federal district court and the Court of Administrative Hearings. Human Services Division AAGs regularly appear at the Minnesota Court of Appeals, the Minnesota Supreme Court, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Attorneys also frequently appear in evidentiary hearings and trials in a variety of forums.
This role affords attorneys the opportunity to:
· Represent the three agencies in different forums – from state and federal courts to administrative agency appeals
· Work on all aspects of civil litigation, from initial answer or Rule 12 motion, through discovery, motion practice, mediation, trial, and appeal
· Work collaboratively with attorneys both within the division and at client agencies
· Work in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment
· Travel occasionally throughout Minnesota, as cases can be venued anywhere in the state
This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment (combination of in-office work and telework).
Minimum Qualifications
· Graduation from a law school accredited by the ABA and actively licensed in good standing to practice law in the State of Minnesota or ability to obtain licensure within 90 days of hire
· Three years of civil litigation experience encompassing all stages including discovery, depositions, motion practice, trials, appeals (a judicial clerkship may count as one year)
· Outstanding writing, research, and oral communication/advocacy skills (writing sample is required with application submission)
· Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
· Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact successfully with clients, stakeholders, colleagues, and members of the public
· Ability to:
o travel to counties throughout the state
o multitask by managing an active caseload and meeting tight deadlines
· Commitment to public service

Preferred Qualifications
