Under general supervision, to inspect buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration and repair; to review building plans and specifications; to enforce building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and housing codes, and state laws; to assist with inspection of City building projects; to issue permits and compute fees; and to do related work as required.

- Possesses a clear command of California Building Codes along with a B-1 ICC Residential Building Inspection certification and 2 years of job site field experience. Bonus qualifications would include: B-2 ICC Commercial Building Inspector Certification, additional ICC trade certifications, experience as a Contractor, Tradesperson, Designer, Building Inspector, Architecture, or engineering, or other industry related professional.
- Is able to conduct site visits and inspections of all construction trades that will include: Grading, pre-concrete, concrete, wood and metal framing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, drywall, and finishes.
- Is comfortable with on-line permit software where all schedules, plans, documents, inspection results, communications, and records are managed electronically.
Typical duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Makes combination field inspections of building construction, plumbing, mechanical, electrical installations, and state codes, in residential, business or public buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations;
- May conduct final inspections of completed work giving approval to acceptable structures and installations;
- Investigates violations of building and housing laws;
- As assigned, spot checks new construction projects for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances;
- Checks plans and specifications for completeness and accuracy;
- Issues permits and computes fees;
- Coordinates with other City departments, public agencies and private construction organizations;
- Gives information to the public regarding all phases of building construction and related fields.
Education and Experience:
- Equivalent to graduation from high school plus
- Two years of experience as a building inspector employed by a municipal or county building department.
- Three years of continuous work in the building trades may be substituted for one year of the required experience; however, experience as a building inspector is preferred.
Required Certification:
- Building Inspector Certification is required.
- Acceptable certificates are: ICC Building Inspector Certificate; or a Certificate or AA degree in Building Construction Technology from an accredited college.
Knowledge of:
- Construction procedures, tools and materials, accepted safety standards, general provisions of the Uniform Building, National Electrical, Uniform Plumbing, Uniform Mechanical Codes, and various Federal, State and local codes.
Ability to:
- Learn specific provisions of applicable codes, ordinances and regulations enforced by the City, especially those pertaining to structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical construction and installation;
- Perform building rehab inspections including technical specifications and report writing;
- Apply technical knowledge of building trades work, and use sound inspection methods to examine workmanship and materials, and to detect deviations from plans, specifications and standard installation practices;
- Read and interpret diagrams, plans and specifications;
- Make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately; maintain cooperative working relationships with engineers, architects, contractors and general public.
Possession of:
- Valid California Driver's License.
- Building Inspector Certificate as described above.
