Introduction
Prince William County Government is seeking a qualified individual to fill the Assistant Director of Human Resources position. This role is essential for managing, developing, and implementing comprehensive HR policies, procedures, and programs across the organization. The Assistant Director will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Line of Business Division and collaborating closely with the Director and the Deputy Director to ensure that HR initiatives align with the organization's overall objectives. This position calls for someone who is experienced and proactive in driving HR strategies that support the government’s mission and goals.
About This Role
The Line of Business Division operates under a Business Partner Model, with service areas of expertise to ensure focus and commitment. This is achieved through two Line of Business Managers, a twelve-member Human Resources Business Partner Group, and assistance from the Human Resources Centers of Excellence Group. The Human Resources Business Partner Group acts as the main point of contact for four Quadrants containing 35 Departments, serving as a strategic intermediary between them and the human resources functional areas of Talent Acquisition & Retention, Employee & Labor Relations, and Benefits Administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance on employee relations and facilitate communication between staff and management
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws (EEOC, ADA, FMLA) and maintain accurate records
- Deliver customer-focused HR services with a hands-on approach to achieve results
- Manage and develop managers and professional staff
- Partner with leadership on organizational planning, policy development, and special projects
Ideal Candidates Bring
- Significant experience in a Human Resources leadership role with broad knowledge and experience in human resource management
- Advanced knowledge of the relationships between HR Centers of Excellence and the Human Resources Business Partner model
- Familiarity with change management and organizational development strategies to influence and assist organizational change initiatives
- Advanced leadership, delegation, coaching, and mentoring skills, and the ability to make sound long- and short-term business decisions
- Ability to identify new opportunities where Human Resources can add value and develop associated plans to incorporate ideas into the County
- Strong leadership experience managing managers and complex programs
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to analyze complex situations and make sound, objective decisions
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED and 8 years of progressively responsible experience in Human Resources
Preferences
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- County Government experience
- Strong knowledge of Applicant Tracking Systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- In-depth understanding of employment laws and regulations
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The position will work in Woodbridge, Virginia
Starting Salary Range
$104,500.50 to $155,000.00 Annually
