The
Department of Parks and Recreation,
Urban Forestry Division (DUF), is hiring a
Community Relations Specialist II position in Honolulu. This position works to build the capacity of the Community Forestry Program and works with various organized non-profit groups, City agencies, State agencies, community groups, and volunteers to facilitate their role as change agents collectively working towards the common goal of improving the overall health of the urban forest.
What You'll Do- Assist with programs and projects to increase public awareness about the benefits of trees, and the laws, rules, and regulations governing trees, and to preserve and increase the urban tree canopy cover.
- Drive to participate in, promote, and/or manage programs and events such as: Arbor Day Hawaii Tree Festival, Mayor's and other Arbor Day ceremonies; The Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA requirements, and Growth Award applications.
- Assist with gathering monthly and annual statistics for tree planting and removals, root pruning, etc. to report progress towards City tree planting and urban tree canopy cover initiatives, various annual reports, and other reporting requirements.
Special Work Requirements- Required to perform work after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays to represent DUF at neighborhood board meetings, City Council hearings, meetings with other community groups, and for special events and projects. May be required to respond to emergency work which may be performed in inclement or extreme weather, exposed to traffic under poor visibility conditions, off-road conditions, after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays. Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.
For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in community, public service, social assistance, or similarly focused programs may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:Two (2) years of responsible experience involving community or public service, social assistance or similar programs.
Applicable Skills:- Knowledge of basic government functions, programs and services.
- Knowledge of characteristics and peculiarities of the community served; the structure, functions and purposes of community organizations and interest groups.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work; and work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with leaders of community, civic and other interest groups.
- Ability to evaluate effectiveness of program and recommend improvements.
- Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:Valid Hawaii driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.
