The City is seeking an energetic, organized, and community-focused professional to serve as the Recreation Coordinator within the Parks & Recreation Department.
About The Role
The Recreation Coordinator performs a variety of administrative and first-line supervisory duties to coordinate the day-to-day operations of city recreation programs for youth, adults, and seniors. This position plays a vital role in planning programs, supporting staff and volunteers, engaging the community, and ensuring high-quality recreation services that enrich the lives of residents.
What You'll Do
Recreation Operations
- Plan, coordinate, implement, and supervise recreation programs, leagues, classes, and special events.
- Ensure timely delivery of scheduled events and activities.
- Implement and enforce policies and procedures.
- Organize and regulate online program registration.
Staff Recruitment & Credentialing
- Participate in recruitment, selection, and training of seasonal, temporary, and volunteer staff.
- Monitor field and site operations; evaluate performance and recommend retention or termination.
- Conduct meetings, workshops, and trainings.
- Ensure legal and certification requirements are met.
- Supervise Recreation Interns, part-time/seasonal staff, officials, and volunteers.
Community Outreach & Promotion
- Assess community recreation interests and needs.
- Develop publicity and marketing materials (news releases, newsletters, flyers, brochures, and social media).
- Maintain strong partnerships with schools and community organizations.
- Present and promote programs to the public.
Programming & Fiscal Management
- Establish program priorities, objectives, schedules, and target markets.
- Assist in budget preparation and administration.
- Prepare cost and revenue projections.
- Purchase and maintain program equipment and supplies.
- Track registrations, maintain records, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Recreation & Sports Programs
- Organize participants into teams and schedule tournaments.
- Coordinate officials, facilities, equipment, volunteers, and staff.
- Write and enforce league rules.
- Referee and umpire games as needed.
- Design and purchase uniforms, awards, and championship materials.
- Set up fields and facilities for game day and ensure safety and cleanliness.
Event Coordination & Patron Relations
- Plan and execute community events and special programs.
- Recruit sponsors and oversee volunteers.
- Investigate complaints and recommend corrective action.
- Represent the City at community-sponsored recreational events.

Ideal Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Event Management, or a related field; OR
- Two (2) years of related experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of recreation program planning, marketing, and community engagement.
- Understanding of team sports management and league organization.
- Familiarity with rules and regulations of various sports and recreational activities.
- Budget preparation and fiscal tracking techniques.
- Proficiency in computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and recreation management systems.
- Strong interpersonal communication and cooperative problem-solving skills.
- Ability to extract reports from recreation software and determine program viability.
- Knowledge of background check processes to ensure participant safety.
- Some knowledge of motorized pitching machines and field painting equipment.
Special Qualifications
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
- Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) designation a plus.
Work Environment
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings. Duties may require physical activity including walking, standing, stooping, lifting, and reaching. Evening and weekend work is frequently required. Local travel is expected in the normal course of duties.
