Internship Program
The City's Internship Program offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to municipal operations. Real work assignments and projects provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Camarillo.
Level of internship and salary is based on education and experience.
- Intern I: Salary Range: $21.22 - $23.34
- Qualifications - Enrolled in an Associate or Bachelor's degree program, or a trade school program with entry level to some work experience.
- Intern II: Salary Range: $23.23 - $26.56
- Qualifications - Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master's degree program or specialized instruction in a particular field.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Minimum Qualifications For Interns
To apply for an internship a candidate must possess the following:
- Current enrollment of at least part-time status and a current transcript with a cumulative grade point average ("GPA") of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited college or university at the time of application. Should the applicant not possess the requisite GPA, a recommendation letter from a faculty member that can attest to his/her initiative, professionalism, soft-skills, leadership, potential, etc., can be submitted in addition to current transcripts; or a recent graduate who has completed the requirement for a Bachelor degree and who is enrolled in a post graduate degree program in a post-secondary institution; or enrollment in a trade school is required for apprenticeship programs.
- Some assignments may require a valid "Class C" California driver license with a good driving record and requirement to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program.
Requirements
Candidates must commit to working a minimum of 15 hours up to 20 hours per week and the duration of assignment may vary from 1-4 years. Internships can be concluded for any reason including completion of a specific project, or to allow other interns an opportunity to earn credit and/or gain experience working on City projects and tasks. Upon completion of the first year and reevaluation of qualifications, the intern may be invited to return.
Positions Available
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
- Community Relations - City Manager's Office
- Additional Requirements: Written communication skills
- Representative Duties: The Community Relations Intern will assist with Citywide communication and outreach efforts, supporting public information dissemination, community engagement, special projects, and general administrative tasks to support the Community Relations team. The internship provides practical experience in public sector communications while supporting the City’s goals of transparency and resident engagement.
- Internship area of specialization: College level course work or degree with a focus or emphasis on finance, business administration, management, public administration, marketing and communications, community relations, or human resources.
- Internship Length: 1 year
- Environmental Compliance/Solid Waste - City Manager's Office
- Preference: Knowledge in Public Administration
- Representative Duties: The Environmental Compliance Intern will support key City initiatives focused on waste reduction, recycling expansion, regulatory compliance, and community education. The internship is structured to allow the intern to build foundational knowledge, contribute to priority projects, and support long-term policy and program implementation. Work will include both major strategic initiatives and smaller, operational projects aligned with the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and Sustainability Master Plan (SMP).
- Internship area of specialization: College level course work or degree with a focus or emphasis on finance, business administration, management, public administration, marketing and communications, community relations, or human resources.
- Internship Length: 2 - 4 years
- Economic Development- City Manager's Office
- Additional Requirements: Communication and research skills
- Representative Duties: The intern will gain comprehensive exposure to municipal economic development through hands-on involvement in the EDSP refresh, Old Town Strategic Plan implementation, business retention and expansion programs, business tax support, and community events. This position offers progressive responsibility across research, business engagement, and program coordination functions, providing valuable real-world experience while contributing to initiatives that strengthen Camarillo's economic vitality and business climate.
- Internship area of specialization: College level course work or degree with a focus or emphasis on finance, business administration, management, public administration, marketing and communications, community relations, or human resources.
- Internship Length: 1 - 2 years
- Capital Projects (2) - Public Works
- Additional Requirements: Class C CDL
- Preference: Office setting experience is preferred.
- Representative Duties: The intern will be trained in CIP design and construction process, analysis of City data and systems, coordination and communication skills working with a variety of engineering and office staff and document management. Eventually the intern will perform stormwater inspections, documentation management for capital projects, perform site visits, record drawing research, support data gathering for the Water Master Plan and Water Reclamation Plant Projects. They will assist with the implementation of the Advanced Meter Infrastructure project, storm drain projects, and closeout documents for the Council chambers Remodel project.
- Internship area of specialization: College level course work or degree with a focus or emphasis in civil engineering, project management, traffic engineering, construction management, and/or land development projects.
- Internship Length: 2 - 4 years
- Land Development - Public Works
- Additional Requirements: Class C CDL is preferred, not required
- Preference: Office experience preferred, but not required
- Representative Duties: The intern will have exposure and training in the processing of various land development tasks as assigned while continuing to familiarize themselves with software and GIS, such tasks may include assisting with Public Records Requests, processing simple 1-off OpenGov permits, providing the status of plan checks/change orders, some post approval record clean-up, assisting the renewal of active project permits, visiting construction sites to observe progress on grading, utility installations, and paving. Eventually the intern will be assisting in the reviews of technical engineering reports, FEMA flood map determinations, inspection of survey monumentation and tie-sheets, participating in pre-construction meetings and inspections. This may also include the use of AutoCAD to updating City Standard Drawings and details, and using Bluebeam software to perform reviews of proposed minor change orders. The intern will initially be given specific tasks to assist with and may progress to these more independent and complicated tasks at around one year of experience.
- Internship area of specialization: College level course work or degree with a focus or emphasis in civil engineering, project management, traffic engineering, construction management, and/or land development projects.
- Internship Length: 2 - 4 years
- Water Resources - Public Works
- Representative Duties: As the intern gains experience, responsibilities will expand to assisting with Annual Lead and Copper Rule sampling coordination and development of the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which will now be prepared twice annually. Tasks may include data organization, document preparation, and support of public communication materials.
- Internship area of specialization: College level coursework or degree with a focus in water, wastewater, and environmental sciences and operations & maintenance; or enrollment in a trade school for a specialty as an apprentice in a maintenance position such as construction, streets and roads maintenance, horticulture, and other infrastructure maintenance. The intern may receive exposure to cross connection control and backflow prevention program concepts, along with introductory field or laboratory observation opportunities as available.

Environment

FIELD
Environment: Outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in or around water; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work at heights and around heavy construction equipment.

Non-classsified Employee Benefits
- 457 Deferred Compensation PTS Plan – The City contributes 7% of employee's gross salary, which is invested by the employee. Employee must contribute .5%.
- Medicare – Employees hired after April 1, 1986 are required to contribute 1.45% of earnings.
