Home businesses are essential to economic diversity and prosperity in Redmond. We want to better support this sector and are looking for an intern’s help to do so. This Economic Development and Long Range Planning Internship will help City of Redmond staff to implement Redmond 2050 including continued refinements to the Redmond Zoning Code, and to perform actions identified by the Economic Development Strategic Action Plan.
Jobs duties would include assisting the Home Business Code Amendment and Community Involvement project that will engage Redmond’s home business sector, form connections and gain an understanding of business needs, owners’ visions for the long-term, and issues that can be addressed through amendments to policies and codes.

Assignment Duration: June 1 through August 31, 2026
Hours/Schedule: The schedule for this role will vary. The position is limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week and no more than 1,040 hours per year.

Role & Responsibilities
- Support Communication with Home Businesses – Through various forms of communication, establish a baseline inventory of home businesses to help the city understand existing conditions such as number, location, size, and business sector and subsector of home businesses.
- Facilitate Forums and Interviews – As part of small group and individual discussions, collect information from owners of home businesses regarding current and future interests, issues, and visions for operating and growing home businesses in Redmond.
- Expand Planning for Complete Neighborhoods – Use questionnaires and other tools to collect and evaluate opportunities for home businesses to strengthen aspects of complete neighborhoods in Redmond’s predominantly residential areas and to align with the floor area and design of new residential housing types. Explore whether home businesses could provide alternative to small businesses locating in or having been displaced from the City’s Centers.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Enrolled and attending a two- or four-year college or university, or vocational training school
- Pursuing degree in economic development, public administration, and urban planning preferred
- Experience using computer, including MS Office (email, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel), and general office equipment.
