ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
COMMUNITY COMMISSION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Salary range: $121,668.00 to $137,532.00 annually

Under the direction of the Deputy Director for District Councils, leads and directs senior managers and other staff to guide and coordinate the operations of the District Councils.
ORGANIZATION
The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability is a City of Chicago Department that provides support to District Councils and the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability. District Councils have been created in each of the City’s 22 police districts. Each District Council is made up of three people elected in regular municipal elections to serve four-year terms. The District Councils’ roles include: building connections between the police and the community at the district level, where the community is a true partner in making the neighborhood safer, addressing problems, and setting priorities; collaborating in the development and implementation of community policing initiatives; holding monthly public meetings, where residents can raise and work to address concerns about policing in the district, increase accountability, and work on local initiatives rooted in community concerns and priorities; working with the community to get input on police department policies and practices; working to develop and expand restorative justice and similar programs in the police district; and ensuring that the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability gets input from the community, so that the Commission’s work will be based on what people in neighborhoods across the City are concerned about. The Community Commission is a seven-member, appointed body that oversees the Police Department, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), and the Police Board. The Commission’s powers include playing a central role in selecting and removing the Police Superintendent, COPA Chief Administrator, and Police Board members; setting Police Department policy; establishing annual goals and evaluating progress for CPD, COPA, and the Police Board; and promoting community engagement and transparency.
Essential Duties
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff (Project Managers and Community Outreach Coordinators, who provide day-to-day support to District Councils) in engaging with community members to encourage and support broad participation in District Council meetings and activities.
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff helping to plan and organize monthly public meetings of each District Council, as well as quarterly and annual citywide meetings for District Councils to identify trends and concerns and propose priorities for the Commission.
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff supporting district-level engagement with the Chicago Police Department.
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff supporting District Council efforts to collaborate with CPD in developing and implementing community policing initiatives.
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff supporting District Council efforts to improve public health and public safety in the community.
- Manages, oversees, and provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff supporting District Council efforts to address concerns about policing in the district.
- Manages major District Council projects and initiatives.
- Manages efforts and initiatives to build effective working relationships between District Council and the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability.
- Provides technical assistance to District Councils and staff.
- Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to management-level staff, including in developing new or revising existing program operations.
- Coordinates and directs work efforts to review performance against goals and objectives and evaluate policies and operations to improve the administration of programs and increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- Assists in developing, coordinating, and implementing training and development activities for District Councilors and staff.
- Anticipates areas of concern and proposes potential solutions.
- Builds and maintains successful working relationships with District Councilors and Commissioners.
- Leads and supports special projects and initiatives at the request of the Executive Director or Deputy Director for District Council.

SHIFT: Monday through Friday
HOURS: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
(occasional work required in the evenings and on weekends)
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE.
Minimum Qualifications
- Nine (9) years of experience related to the responsibilities of the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR
- Graduation from an accredited college with an associate’s degree in a field related to the duties performed, including seven (7) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the duties performed, including five (5) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree or higher in a field related to the duties performed, including four (4) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position.

Preference Will Be Given To Candidates Possessing The Following
- Previous experience managing staff
- Previous experience of community organizing
- Previous experience working in diverse communities
- Previous experience working with people with a wide range of perspectives
Selection Requirements
This position requires applicants to complete an interview, which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
