The City of Wausau is hiring a Fleet Mechanic (Municipal Fleet Technician) to maintain and repair the vehicles and equipment that keep our community moving. From dump trucks and plows to emergency vehicles and heavy equipment—your work keeps essential services operating every day.

What You’ll Work OnYou won’t be stuck doing the same thing every day. You’ll work on a wide variety of equipment:
- Medium & heavy-duty trucks
- Heavy equipment and attachments
- Emergency vehicles
- Small engines and specialty equipment
Quick Facts About This Position- $26.12/hour or higher DOQ + $1.45/hour shift differential

- 2nd Shift: Monday–Friday, 2:30 PM – 10:30 PM
- Overtime paid after 8 hours/day
- Paid CDL Training (we cover it + pay you while you train - see Additional Information section for details)

- Perform inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance
- Troubleshoot engines, hydraulics, electrical, and computerized systems
- Repair and replace components across a wide range of equipment
- Perform welding and fabrication as needed
- Upfit new equipment for City departments
- Complete work orders and maintain repair records
- Provide roadside service when needed
- Respond to emergency situations and on-call needs
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Formal training OR at least 1 year of experience in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair
- Valid Driver’s License
AND:
- Ability to pass CDL written exam within 30 days
Ability to obtain Class A CDL (no air brake restrictions) within 9 months
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with diesel engines and heavy equipment
- CDL Class A with N endorsement
- Experience with hydraulics, electrical systems, or diagnostics
- Welding and fabrication experience

Work EnvironmentThis role includes physical work such as lifting, standing, bending, and working in shop and outdoor environments with exposure to weather, noise, and equipment hazards

HIRING BONUS INFORMATION:The Wausau City Council approved a Hiring Bonus program that allows Human Resources to offer a hiring bonus of $2000 for this position if hired during this recruitment. This amount is subject to employment taxes, including FICA and Federal/State Income taxes. If the employee separates for any reason from service with the City of Wausau within 12 months of hire date, the bonus shall be repaid to the City at 100%. If the employee separates from service between 13-24 months of hire, the bonus shall be repaid to the City at 75%. If the employee separates from service between 25-36 months of hire, the bonus shall be repaid to the City at 50%. No repayment shall be collected if the employee separates from service after 36 months of your hire date.
CDL TRAINING INFORMATION:The City of Wausau will make arrangements for the Employee's enrollment in the CDL training program and ensure that all necessary payments are made directly to the training institution. The City of Wausau will directly cover the full cost of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training program, including tuition, materials, and testing, as provided by an accredited training institution.As a condition of receiving this benefit, Employee agrees to comply with the following terms and conditions:- Participate in the CDL training program, adhere to the program's requirements, and diligently complete all necessary coursework, training, and examinations.
- Take and successfully pass the Theory Training Assessment with a minimum 80% and participate in Behind-the-wheel Training to demonstrate proficiency sufficient to pass the State administered CDL skills test.
- Successfully pass the State administered CDL skills test and obtain a Class A CDL or Class B CDL with no restrictions.
The City of Wausau will compensate regular wages for the class and test time. Any study time spent outside of class will not be compensable. Further, Employee agrees to remain actively employed with the City of Wausau for a period of thirty-six (36) months following the date of receipt of the certification.Should Employee fail to obtain the Class A CDL or Class B CDL, voluntarily terminate employment with The City of Wausau prior to the thirty-six (36) month date referenced in item E above or be discharged for cause prior to the thirty-six (36) month date referenced in item E above, Employee agrees and promises to repay the cost of the course noted in item A above. Costs will be prorated at 100% from 0 to 1 year, 75% from 1 to 2 years, and 50% from 2 to 3 years.This agreement shall be canceled in its entirety upon completion of thirty-six (36) months of continued employment or in the event of death, a permanent layoff, or a permanent disability of the employee prior to the thirty-six (36) month date.
