DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL

As an Animal Care Attendant I you will, under close supervision, feed and care for animals and maintain sanitary conditions at Animal Care Centers.
Essential Job Functions
What will you do:
- Feed and provide water to impounded animals; select and prepare appropriate type and quantity of food.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain sanitary conditions of kennels, cages, corrals, grounds, equipment, and facilities at an Animal Control Shelter.
- Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs of facilities and equipment at an Animal Control Care Center.
- Assist higher-level personnel in releasing of animals to owners.
- Bathe, groom, and prepare animals available for placement.
- Maintain simple records related to daily animal care and conditions by utilizing database software.
- Assist higher-level personnel in preparing, restraining, medicating and vaccinating animals or in performing euthanasia, as needed.
- Transport animals to and from veterinary offices and other medical facilities, as needed.
- Assist in the office by answering telephones, responding to inquiries from the public regarding care, retention, and disposal of animals; may collect fees and issue receipts, as needed.
- Pick up supplies needed at the Animal Care Center, as needed.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option i
Graduation from high school or completion of G.E.D, or equivalent - AND- Six months of experience working with the general public or working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, clinical setting, or animal services facility.
Option Ii
Certificate of completion as a participant within the Los Angeles County Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN)/ General Relief Opportunities for Work (GROW) program - AND - Six months of experience working with with the general public or working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, clinical setting, or animal services facility.
Out-of-class work experience in the service of the County of Los Angeles will not be accepted for this examination.
License
A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment.
A valid California Class B Driver License may be required for some positions at the time of appointment.
Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted or revoked.
Physical Class
4 - Arduous. This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

Applicants must meet the requirements, and achieve a combined passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

Special Information
Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
This position requires lifting of extremely heavy objects. Physical fitness for this position will be determined in a medical examination.
Eligibility & Vacancy Information
The names of successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible Register for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Animal Care and Control Care Centers throughout Los Angeles County.
