This recruitment process is for the Firefighter Trainee Academy list, Career Firefighter Transition Academy and Career Firefighter Bridge Academy lists, depending on the experience and certifications documented.

Glendale Fire Department Firefighter Process - Next Steps

- Provides emergency fire suppression, rescue, and medical services. Responds to alarms as a member of a firefighting company.
- Lays and connects hose lines, directs water and pressure streams, uses chemical extinguishers, raises and climbs ladders, ventilates buildings, rescues persons. Operates all types of bars, hooks, lines, forcible entry tools, and other rescue equipment.
- Protects citizens' property; performs salvage and clean-up operations.
- Provides emergency medical technician level assistance at injury or accident scenes involving basic life support, and paramedic support functions.
- Performs first responder hazardous materials procedures.
- Participates in a physical fitness program to maintain required physical condition.

Qualifications
Firefighter trainee / firefighter qualifications, requirements are necessary
by time of hire, unless otherwise specified. Required qualification include but are not limited to :
- High School Education: Diploma or GED by application close date
- Age: 18 years or older
- A completed and active Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. A completed and active Arizona Paramedic certification is also acceptable.
- A National Registry (NR) certification for EMT or Paramedic is acceptable at time of hire but conversion to an Arizona Department of Health Services certification is expected by start of academy. Preference may be given to candidates that upload an active and completed Paramedic certification at the time of application.
- Current CPAT : A current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is required for general academy assignments. Glendale will only accept a CPAT from Qualified Agencies showing certified by IAFF (examples include but are not limited to: National Testing Network, Maricopa Community College).
- Valid / Unrestricted Arizona Driver's License with an acceptable (39 month minimum) driving record : At the time of hire the city requires all employees to have an Arizona Driver’s license and an acceptable (39 month minimum) driving record per practice by risk management. Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) Preference Points - 38-492

Selection Process for All Candidates
Successful completion of the current firefighter series testing process is necessary to be considered eligible for consideration. Candidates whose information, testing, training, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience most closely meet the needs of the position may be invited to participate in the next steps of the process. The Fire Chief has final selection authority after reviewing all process information. Human Resources and the Fire Department reserve the right to terminate or extend the life of a process or an eligibility list at any time.
Candidates selected for conditional offer must successfully complete pre and post offer requirements that may include but are not limited to : Department of Public Safety and FBI background check, fingerprint, MVR, alcohol/drug testing, employer reference check and pass a medical physical administered by a Glendale Fire Department authorized physician and meeting NFPA standards. To maintain eligibility of employment candidates must successfully complete their assigned academy (Glendale regular firefighter trainee academy or advanced career academy's; Firefighter Transition, or Firefighter Bridge) to become a Glendale Firefighter. It is important to have strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a commitment to serving others.
Advanced Career Academy’s : Firefighter Transition and Bridge Academy
Eligibility for an advanced academy is determined by the Fire Department. Candidates who wish to be considered for the advanced academies must meet the qualifications / requirements as previously stated as well as the additional below requirements 1 and 2.
- Both Firefighter Transition and Bridge Academy require the applicant to currently be employed as a Firefighter:
The applicant must be currently employed / working as a career full-time, paid firefighter. This does not include compensated or non-compensated volunteer firefighter, or temporary / seasonal / part time wildland firefighter status. Employment details must be included in the application for consideration : current firefighter employment dates, agency name, experience.
Either A or B - Upload certification(s) with your application as a PDF labeled with the cert and your name. Specifically For Advance Career Transition Academy: Applicants must have a graduation certificate from a qualified Arizona Fire Academy or training center listed here; City Public Safety Training Center: Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale Regional, Mesa, Phoenix Fire Department Academy; or Tempe APS joint fire training center. Specifically For Advanced Career Bridge Academy: Applicants that do not have an Arizona Fire Academy / training center graduation certificate from the above agencies may qualify for the Bridge Academy with proof of certification from; IFSAC / Pro Board or State Firefighter I & II certifications.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Required Work Schedule
Firefighters assigned to the operations division may work shifts that consists of an average 56 hours per week - 1/3/2/3 schedule rotation: 24-hour shift on duty / 72 hours (3 days) off / 48-hour shift (2 consecutive 24-hour shifts ) on duty / 72 hours (3 days) off.
Working Conditions
Require working in heavy traffic, in confined, cramped areas, at considerable heights, and under stressful situations, with exposure to extreme heat, adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, and contagious diseases. Work requires intense concentration, sustained physical activity, intense concentration, heavy lifting and climbing.
Other Elements For All Candidates
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education if education is required.
