Job Description: Salary \$74,622.80 - \$94,529.59 / Annually
Commensurate with experience. Step Salary System to be awarded annually
on the anniversary date of hire and would typically start at Step 1.

REPORTS TO: Works under the general direction of the Commissioner of
Buildings ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assist the Superintendent of Buildings in
the performance of his/her duties Inspects work in connection with the
enforcement and interpretation of the Massachusetts Building Code and
other applicable codes relating to building construction and design, as
well as zoning enforcement Reviews plans, specifications and
calculations of all applications for building permits Ensures that plans
and specifications conform to codes Inspects existing buildings for
life-safety purposes and inspects all new construction, alterations, and
additions to buildings; enforces provisions of the zoning ordinance
Inspects construction to ensure that buildings and structures are built
in accordance with submitted plans Responds to complaints related to
dangerous situations, such as abandoned houses, illegal apartments, or
other complaints Issues letters of violation, pursues court action;
instructs contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners, when
necessary, to correct situations that are not in conformity with
applicable codes Performs similar or related duties as required, as
situation dictates or as assigned by the Superintendent of Buildings or
his/her designee Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE: Five
years of experience in supervision of building construction or design
and zoning enforcement; an Associate\'s Degree in a related field
desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirement: Massachusetts Certification as a Local Building
Inspector required within 18 months of employment. Valid Massachusetts
motor vehicle operator\'s license and a dependable vehicle. KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the materials and methods of
building construction and equipment and thorough knowledge of the
Massachusetts Building Code and other applicable state statutes, rules,
and regulations Knowledge of accepted requirements for building
construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe egress
Thorough knowledge of field inspection practices Ability to enforce
codes and regulations fairly and impartially Ability to read and
interpret plans and specifications Ability to interact effectively with
the general public, construction personnel, technical personnel, and
state and local officials Ability to communicate effectively orally and
in writing Ability to maintain complete and accurate inspection records
Ability to stay informed of code changes Excellent communication skills
