Animal Shelter Assistant - Beaufort County Animal Services
Description of Work: Cleans and sanitizes animal kennels; provides food and water to confined animals; walk dogs; makes routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health, safety, cleanliness of cages, etc. Provides office support activities including reception, records compilation, data entry, file management, etc. Processes adoption; takes information; takes fees; releases animals to owners. Participates in preparing animals for possible adoption; assists interested parties in claiming or adopting confined animals; processes required paperwork, collects fees, and provides receipts. Answers telephone calls from the public and provides information on a variety of animal control issues; dispatches animal control officers in response to calls for service. Maintains a variety of records and reports. Performs other related work as required. Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Saturday & Sunday 8:00 AM – 11:30.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge of state laws and local ordinances and departmental policies and procedures relating to rabies, animal control and confinement of animals. Knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and to know temperament of various breeds. Knowledge of and ability to use required technology. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Skill in customer service. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers. Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact, courtesy and firmness when dealing with animal owners and the public. Ability to maintain accurate records and reports concerning animals, daily activities, and fiscal matters such as fee collection.
Minimum Requirements: Must possess the visual acuity to use a computer terminal to prepare records, operate equipment and distinguish details and differences when observing breeds and colors of animals. Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, an/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to use a computer terminal to prepare records, operate equipment and distinguish details and differences when observing breeds and colors of animals.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school, office experience involving contact with the public and experience in handling and caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a valid NC driver’s license.
