I'm hiring an Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism for the City of Baytown!

I'm looking for someone who genuinely enjoys this profession, cares about the community they serve, and is excited about helping a department and its people get better. Our Assistant Director works closely with me and helps provide leadership across a very diverse department — parks, recreation, tourism, nature, special events, facilities, capital projects, and more. You don't have to be the expert in every one of those areas. We have talented people who are. You do need to be willing to learn how each area works, ask good questions, solve problems, and help keep everyone moving in the same direction.

I'm looking for someone who is:

Organized and detail-oriented — strong with processes, paperwork, computer systems, budgets, data, and the administrative side of running a large department.
A strong people leader — able to work with different personalities and work styles, build team morale, coach employees, and also handle difficult conversations and discipline when necessary.
Good at execution — able to take a high-level vision, turn it into an actionable plan, and follow it through from beginning to end.
Comfortable juggling a lot — multiple deadlines, competing priorities, projects, and several very different divisions all moving at the same time.
Professional and confident — able to represent the department with City leadership, Parks Board, Council, community partners, and professional organizations.
A strong communicator and storyteller — someone who can take what we're doing, the data behind it, and clearly explain why the work matters.
Focused on improvement — willing to set expectations, celebrate real successes, identify where we need to get better, and follow through.
Invested in developing people — someone who wants to raise the professional level of our department and help employees grow.
Visible and engaged — someone who wants to see our parks, programs, facilities, and events firsthand, not just manage them from an office.

Most importantly, I'm looking for someone who sees this as an opportunity to grow, take on real responsibility, make an impact, and help us continue building something special in Baytown.
