The
Honolulu Emergency Services Department (HESD) is recruiting motivated individuals with a passion for helping others to join as
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT I). This is a hands-on opportunity to serve the community by providing emergency medical care and assisting patients when they need it most.
EMS ACADEMY INFORMATION
The current vacancies aretemporary (limited-term) positions with the Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS).
This position participates in the City's EMS Academy.
Academy Overview
- Train at the City's EMS Academy to learn emergency medical skills and procedures.
- Complete classroom and hands-on training in basic emergency medical care.
- Participate in supervised field training and emergency response activities.
Academy Requirements
- Successfully complete all phases of the EMS Academy within a reasonable time.
- Complete the required coursework and training to meet the requirements for State of Hawaii EMT-Transport licensure.
- Obtain State of Hawaii EMT-Transport licensure in a timely manner.
Career Advancement
- Upon obtaining your State of Hawaii EMT-Transport Certificate, advance to EMT II and continue your career with the City's Emergency Medical Services Division.
Training Schedule
- Training is expected to begin around July 2027 and last approximately 20 weeks.
What You Will Do
- Assess and provide emergency care to injured or ill patients, including recognizing life-threatening conditions and providing basic life support.
- Assist with patient treatment and transport by controlling bleeding, treating wounds, applying splints, moving patients, and providing care and comfort during transport.
- Assist with emergency medical procedures under the direction and supervision of higher-level EMTs and Mobile Emergency Care Specialists.
- Operate and maintain emergency equipment and ambulances by completing pre-checks, performing minor maintenance, and keeping equipment clean and ready for use.
- Complete required training and emergency response duties including defensive driving, emergency vehicle operations, in-service training, and Homeland Security programs.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Special Working Conditions
- Work rotating, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required.
- Respond to emergencies in all weather, road, and traffic conditions.
- Lift, move, and transport patients in physically demanding situations.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood, bodily fluids, and other biohazards.
- May work in hazardous environments and around dangerous materials.
- May handle stressful situations involving emotionally distressed, intoxicated, or combative patients or bystanders.

- The written test will be administered ONLY on OAHU and ONLY on November 14, 2026 .

- Failure to report for and/or take the written test will result in the disqualification of your application from further consideration.

- Eligible List: Candidates who pass the written test will be placed on an eligible list for further consideration in the EMT I selection process.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Current State Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate
All licenses and certifications must be valid at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment. Maintenance of these licenses/certifications and a satisfactory driving record is a condition of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Prior to Completion of Probation
- Obtain a valid nationally recognized Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate through the City's EMS Academy.
- Successfully complete an EMT-Transport course that meets or exceeds the curriculum required for the State of Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners EMT-Transport Certificate within six months of appointment.
- Comply with all requirements of the participating training facility as required to successfully complete the EMT-Transport training program.
NOTE: Applicants must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary to safely and effectively perform the duties of this position.
