An employee in this class serves as a customer service representative in the Tax Assessors’ Office. An employee in this class is responsible for listing personal property, discovering personal property, inputting tax evaluations and information into the computer. Accuracy is required in entering data into the computer. Some independent judgment and initiative must be exercised within limits of prescribed policies. Tact and courtesy are essential. Superior customer service is required. Work is performed under the supervision of the Personal Property Supervisor and is evaluated by observation, use of records, and through employee evaluations.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Assists taxpayers in listing property; files abstracts; enters new and changed information in computer records; compiles information.
Discovers personal property not listed, sends correspondence to taxpayers, and assists with the creation of a Discovery bill.
Processes vehicle refunds & adjustments.
Assists lawyers, real estate agents, and citizens in searching tax records, maps, and other documents.
Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and file maintenance programs to enter, store, and/or retrieve information; maintains pertinent files and records; scans and copies documents as necessary; ensures files are complete and accurate.
Answers public's questions on property valuations, listings, tax bills, and other records.
Processes incoming and outgoing mail and emails.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the procedures, records, and forms used in the tax collection, listing, and evaluation processes.
Knowledge of State laws and local policies regulating the tax assessment and collection functions.
Working knowledge of the NC Machinery act, State and Local laws and policies regulating tax assessment.
Ability to make mathematical calculations.
Proficiency with Excel and Word required.
Knowledge of Power Point.
Ability to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer terminal, printer, and copy machine.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, employees, co-workers, and the general public.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by one (1) year of experience in customer service, public service, or general office or clerical assistance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
Must obtain Fundamentals of Tax Listing and Assessing Certification within two years of employment.
