HORTICULTURE SUPERVISOR

$80,000 PER YEAR + BENEFITS (depending on qualifications)

Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the employee is responsible for directing and overseeing the work of the horticulture division staff. The employee oversees the landscape maintenance of the City parks, grounds, and rights-of-way (ROW) ensuring they are free from unseemly or overgrown vegetation and present a superior look throughout the City. The work involves planning, scheduling, planting, and maintaining the City’s flowerbeds, boxes, and rose gardens. This is a highly responsible position that requires extensive knowledge, talent and experience in landscape planting and maintenance, attention to detail, communication, organization, and administration skills as well as education in herbicide and pesticide applications. The employee conducts periodic checks of work to ensure work is completed according to expectations and specifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in botany, plant science, horticulture management or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of practical work experience in landscape management and maintenance, preferably in an Alabama municipal setting; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
- Possess a current and valid Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a commercial drivers license within six (6) months of hire if requested; must be insurable.
- Possess and ability to maintain, or ability to obtain, Ornamental Turf and Pest Control (OTPC) Custodian license through ADAI.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Certified Arborist designation through the International Society of Arboriculture within three (3) years of hire.
- Ability to successfully complete the Setting Landscape Plants course offered by ADAI.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, or emergencies as needed.
