Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the enforcement of City building codes and other applicable codes and ordinances through on-site inspections, review of construction plans for code compliance, investigation of construction complaints, public awareness, and code interpretations. Reports to the Chief Building Inspector.
- Performs field inspections of construction sites and structures or other permitted elements under construction for code compliance.
- Performs building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical inspections for residential and commercial projects for Code Compliance and safety.
- Prepares inspection reports for contractors and office records.
- Reviews proposed construction plans for residential and commercial projects for adequacy and Code Compliance.
- Prepares plan review comments for contractors and follow-up on such until resolved.
- Reviews, calculates, prepares and approves permit applications.
- Receives, investigates and follows-up on citizen construction related complaints.
- Receives and answers code, permit and construction related questions from the general public as required.
- Coordinates and attends meetings with contractors, general public or other agencies as required.
- Maintains memberships and certifications necessary to maintain professional credibility.
- Prepares and generates information such as plan review comments, inspection reports, code interpretations, complaint investigations and permit applications.
- Prepares information for the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule Report.
- Refers to international codes, NFPA codes, ANSI regulations, adopted codes and county, state and federal regulations.
- Utilizes a variety of computer software to include Incode, Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace, GIS, Orion, and Citizenserve.
- Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include design professionals, state and federal authorities, contractors, property owners, co-workers and other departments.
- Meets with government officials, engineers, architects, contractors, and the public as required.
- Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment such as a City pickup truck.
- Utilizes a variety of materials and/or supplies to include electrical circuit tester, volt meter, calculator, transit and various hand tools.
Education and Experience:Technical Degree in a related field and three (3) years of experience in a job-related field;or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Special Qualifications:Requires certification as a Building Inspector through a recognized program or be willing to work toward such certification within a specified time period.
Valid Driver’s License.
