Description / Position Overview
Park Ranger II - Regional Parks, Trails, and Open Spaces
As a Park Ranger II, you will ensure the City's natural and historical resources are maintained, preserved, and protected according to pertinent laws, ordinances, and regulations; provide soft enforcement of safety and environmental regulations; uphold the specific requirements set forth by the Parks Master Plans of specific properties; and monitor the activities of assigned parks and recreation facilities.
Essential Functions: - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Patrol parks throughout the day; address public safety and health issues; monitor parks for hazards; and remove trash
- Monitor properties for resource damage; respond to emergency situations on park properties
- Provide basic maintenance; maintain equipment;
- Develop projects and work tasks with staff, oversee completion
- Provide snow and ice removal/mitigation; monitor and replace park signage; create daily and weekly work plans, ensure completion and assign work tasks to full-time and seasonal employees
- Participate in the planning and implementation of trail rehabilitation, construction, erosion control, and reclamation projects
- Respond to emergencies on park property; coordinate with public safety personnel; provide direction for access and closures needed regarding emergencies
- Act as liaison between the public and inter-governmental agencies; maintain close communications with Colorado Springs Police Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department, Colorado Springs Utilities, Division of Parks and Wildlife, and the Humane Society
- Coordinate with non-profits, Friends groups, and various local organizations to accomplish goals for assigned properties; facilitate meetings regarding projects
- Prepare facilities for special events; support the event coordinators; ensure facilities are safe, clean, and prepared for events; verify proper permits are obtained; evaluate and provide feedback after the event
- Participate in the selection of full-time and seasonal employees; coordinate pre-employment interviews; provide staff training, ensure ongoing statistical and data collection
- Respond to sick or injured animals; remove carcasses of dead animals.
- Communicate with staff and the public to address any concerns
Minimum Qualifications
- Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
- Three years of full-time, professional experience in a related field.
Education and Experience Equivalency: One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.
Certifications and Licenses: Must possess or be able to acquire the following certifications and/or licenses required in accordance with standards established by departmental policy.
- CPR certification (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) - Within three months of start date
- First Aid Certification - Within three months of start date
- Colorado Driver's License - Upon Start Date
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Operation and basic maintenance needs of equipment utilized in park patrol
- Proper transport and tie-down requirements
- Operations, services, and activities of park facilities and programs
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Ability To
- Coordinate care for sick and/or injured animals
- Use current technology such as smart telephones and associated technology
- Safely use assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles
- Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
