The City of Lenexa is accepting applications for a paid summer 2025
Parks and Recreation Intern. This internship offers hands-on experience in program development, event coordination, and daily operations. This role allows you to contribute to community events, assist with recreation activities, and complete a special project showcasing your program or event management skills.
Hours and Location:
- Parks and Recreation operates throughout Lenexa with varying schedules; the intern should anticipate evening and weekend hours for events and programs.
- Work a consistent on-site schedule of 35 – 40 hours per week as mutually agreed upon with the supervisor.
- Internship dates are flexible, with an estimated duration from mid-May to mid–August.
Key Responsibilities - Assist with recreation programs and events under the guidance of recreation managers and supervisors.
- Support the planning and execution of major events, including:
- The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle
- Community Days Parade
- Freedom Run
- Movie Nights and Farmers’ Markets.
- Gain experience working alongside staff in recreation operations.
- Contribute to summer camp activities, including field trip supervision.
- Complete a special project demonstrating program or event management skills.
Qualifications - Required:
- Current college student with at least 30 credit hours in Parks and Recreation or a related field.
- Ability to work Monday–Friday, 8am – 5pm, with flexibility for events during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Preferred:
- 60+ credit hours and coursework or an internship requirement in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or Wildlife Management.
The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.
Physical And Environmental Factors
This role requires lifting and moving supplies, standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in varying conditions.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
