Summary

Under close supervision, assists recreation staff in providing varied youth recreation and sports programs, assists in supervising children during activities, assists at the Lomita Railroad Museum and special events; and performs related duties as required. This position is at-will and has limited benefits.
This is the entry-level classification in the part-time Recreation Leader series. Incumbents in this classification receive on-the-job training, specific day-to-day direction, and are closely supervised. Incumbents are expected to exercise routine judgment within established policies and procedures and refer more complex or difficult matters to supervisory personnel.

Responsibilities
Positions in this classification typically perform a full range of duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:
Act as coach, scorekeeper, or official in youth sports games; teach fundamentals of sportsmanship and basic techniques of the sport to participants; convey instructions and rules of games, sports, and other activities to participants; may assist in the operation of an adult sport league; prepare facility for sporting events by setting up nets and goals, lining fields, etc.
Provide recreation program information to the public via phone and in person at the Recreation Office; assist participants with program registration; accept payment for registrations.
Assist with facility rental by informing patrons of City regulations and policies; monitor rental sites for adherence to City regulations and policies and report issues to supervisory personnel; open and close various City facilities for use; monitor the condition of equipment and facilities utilizing standard checklists and identify items needing correction or repair.
Assist recreation staff at special events; assist with set-up and clean-up of special events, including custodial duties at parks and facilities; assist with custodial duties of the Recreation Office; assist with promotion of special events, such as distributing promotional flyers.
When assigned to work at the Lomita Railroad Museum, welcome visitors to the museum; collect admission; provide information to the public regarding the museum's exhibitions, hours of operation, and special events; facilitate gift shop sales; provide support for museum staff as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic coaching, officiating and scorekeeping principles and techniques.
- Skill in officiating, teaching, coaching, and scorekeeping youth sports.
- Skill in providing excellent customer service and interacting with youth and adults for both recreation and museum activities.
- Skill in the utilization of personal computer hardware and software applications, including recreation program registration software.
- Ability to operate a cash register for museum purposes.
- Ability to become certified in CPR and first aid within six months of employment.
- Ability to learn City policies and regulations regarding recreation programs and the use of City facilities.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; do basic arithmetic; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers.
- Ability to work weekend and evening shifts.
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
No experience required, but some volunteer experience and/or participation in recreation activities is desirable. For minors currently enrolled in high school, a work permit is required.
Certificates/ Licenses/ Registrations
Must obtain CPR and first aid certification within six months of employment.
Other Qualifications
Ability to successfully pass a physical examination performed by a physician designated by the City and successfully pass a Live Scan.
Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Ability to work independently and on project teams.
Part-time employees are limited to working 19 hours per week.
RETIREMENT
- All part-time employees are enrolled in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan; Mission Square Retirement Plan. Part-time employees contribute 7.5% per pay check.
SICK LEAVE: Accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked; capped at 80 hours.
