Job Summary
Under general supervision of a Supervising Fire Inspector, performs fire and life safety inspections in new and existing occupancies. Upon completion of a comprehensive training program, incumbents will interpret and enforce federal, state and local regulations as they apply to mandated inspections, operational fire code permits, general business inspections, weed abatement, fireworks, special event permits, complaints related to fire and life safety, may assist/perform origin and cause fire investigations, provides technical consultation, assistance and collaboration to industries and other governmental agencies; is subject to call back and can work weekends or irregular work hours during the day or evening; performs other duties as required.

- Inspects various occupancy types to determine and enforce compliance with local and state fire and life safety codes.
- Issues permits, and assigns fees; interprets policies, procedures, and documents relating to types of chemicals; determines if Hazardous Materials Management plan is required; reviews, evaluates, and processes Hazardous Materials Management plans.
- Collects, analyzes, and evaluates data and prepares comprehensive reports.
- Interprets various local, state, and national fire and life safety codes for the public and makes recommendations.
- Writes reports based on field notes; issues Notices of Violation and citations for code violations; prepares materials necessary for litigation.
- Trains, advises, and assists district personnel on fire inspections, fire prevention practices and procedures, and Hazardous Materials Management Plans.
- Investigates fire and life safety complaints received from the public and takes appropriate action.
- Participates in public information/education activities.
- Investigates the origin & cause of fire; preserves evidence; cooperates with local, state and federal agencies in detection, apprehension, and prosecution of arsonists.
- Works with state and local governmental agencies for compliance and enforcement of fire codes and standards.
- Enforces laws and regulations pertaining to weed abatement.
- Enforces laws and regulations pertaining to fireworks.
- Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and a physical to include a drug screen.
The education or experience requirements may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief. At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; both requirements cannot be modified or waived. The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors shall be notified of any such modifications or waivers.
Age
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Education And Experience
Education must be obtained through a post secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education.
Required
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
- Possess a degree (Associate's, Bachelor's and/or Master's) in any subject or have completed a minimum of fifteen (15) college units in Fire Science or Fire Technology.
In order to confirm this requirement, candidates must include as an attachment to their application an unofficial transcript which shows the completion of at least fifteen (15) college units in Fire Science, Fire Technology or completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in any subjects Candidates who do not provide this information will be unable to move forward in the process.
- Possess or be able to obtain Penal Code 832 Certificate within twelve (12) months of hire date as a condition of employment.
- Successful completion of the Fire Inspector I Task Book is required by the end of the 12 month probationary period.
Desirable
- Bilingual ability.
- Hold current International Code Council (ICC) certificates as Inspector I, Inspector II and/or Plans Examiner.
- Completion of California State Fire Training (SFT) courses for Fire Inspector 1, Fire Inspector 2 and/or Plan Examiner.
- Completion of SFT Fire Investigation 1A, 1B and/or 1C.

Eligibility List: Candidates must be successful in all examination phases to be placed on an eligibility list. The Fire Chief will, when filling vacancies, make a selection from those on the eligibility list. The eligibility list will be active for up to six (6) months and may be extended or canceled at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
Background Investigation: Candidates offered formal employment must be successful in all examination phases, including passing the District's background investigation to include a criminal history check, DMV verification, credit history review, truth verification examination, psychological examination, physical examination, and a drug screening.
